What are your favorites?

I am a librarian in a 1-5 elementary school. While I love the ones you've mentioned, I'd have a VERY hard time picking favorites. One of my best times ever is when I read aloud from one of the best picture books I can find for the topic at hand, or just for fun. There are too many to list but here are a few NEWER ones that you might like. I read aloud to all grades and they love it.

Lesson, read aloud to all kids!

Hugless Douglas

I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!

The Thirteen Hours of Halloween

The 12 Days of Summer

Bats At the BallGame

Bats in the Library

A Visitor for Bear

Knuffle Bunny

Knuffle Bunny Too

Knuffle Bunny Free

And the Pigeon books by Mo Willems

Don't discount the fiction written for kids and young adults. Several fiction books have dealt with the topic of autism and asperger's syndrome with amazing directness and sensitivity. Others are just great reads! Mystery, fantasy, speculative fiction, you name it. And kids are sucking it up like it is air!

Happy reading.

Oh, BTW, my all time classic favorite is The Story of Ferdinand. (the bull who dared to be different) Kids still love this 1936 story.

I love "The Story of Ferdinand" too.

Some more modern picture books I like are:

No, David!

Click, Clack, Moo cows that can type

Fletcher and the falling leaves

Dr. DeSoto

I love YA fiction as well. I have read all of the Margaret Peterson Haddix books, the Cornelia Funke books, and I love the Jeanie Birdsall Penderwick series.

I love picture books!

I love Eric Carle books.

Are You My Mother, a Dr. Seuss book, one of my favorites from when I was a kid.

Bark, George (can't remember the author)

Freight Train by Donald Crews

One of my favorite things about being a preschool teacher was reading to the kids. I was always finding new treasures.

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

I read aloud every night to my boys and will until they refuse to listen.

I would read to my 8th graders every once in awhile

Anansi the Spider books

The Places You Will Go

And those big bad teenagers would ask if they could sit on the floor and made sure I showed the pictures. Big kids.

And a treasure my kids love that we found in a used bookstore is a book called

A Porcupine Named Fluffy which is hilarious and sweet and about accepting yourself and others.

Goodnight Moon

Your Mama is a Llama

love to share stories and real aloud.

Noddy books by Enid Blyton (they went through a phase of being considered very non-pc)

Percy the Park Keeper by Nick Butterworth (the kids loved this and it was a bedtime favourite)

I just love picture books that are rich with artwork. One of my favorites is King Bidgoods in the Bathtub. I just love all the detail in the pictures.

I also enjoy the simplicity of the story and the fantastic illustration in "The Relative's Came"

As for reading aloud to my boys, I did this every night for fourteen years (until my youngest was 11 years old). I will always treasure that time. Our absolute favorite book, that we read a loud every year was "Bunnicula" by James Howe. We would just laugh out loud together, and it doesn't get any better than that.

One Snowy Night - Nick Butterworth

We have a couple of tote boxes full of books the kis had when they were little.

After asking the kids which their favourites were, they now want to get the boxes out

My favorite book to read to my niece and nephew was, "Are You My Mother?" They had a GREAT FABULOUS HILARIOUS audio tape of that book, too.

I remember loving The Pokey Little Puppy, The Diggingest Dog, and I Wish That I Had Duck Feet.

My daughter is very little, only 20 months, but her absolute favorite is Curious George Gets a Medal. She also loves Moo Baa La La La, and we read Goodnight Moon every night. I love Llama Llama Red Pajama, but she doesn't think it's as funny as I do.

I learned to read on that and Are You My Mother.

Ezra Jack Keats is good, too.

t/j on grandkids

I love children's verse and poetry too. I have a big collection and can recite hundreds.

The other day I was in the park with my baby gdd pushing her in a swing. I started saying (in a loud voice)

'How do you like to go up in a swing

up in the air so blue

oh, I do think it's the pleasantest thing

ever a child can do

Up in th air and over the wall

till you can see so wide

rivers and trees and cattle and all

over the countryside

Till I look down on the garden so green

down on the roof so brown

up in the air I go flying again

up in the air and down (Stevenson R.L)

I got some funny looks but my gdd loved it. She loves The Gruffalo.

end of t/j

The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone by Timothy Basil Ehring.

For true connoisseurs of children's picture books. The artwork alone is amazing.

Ludwig Bemelmans'classic Madeline books - still love that spunky heroine.

Love you Forever makes me weep and has been banished from my home.

She packed up her potential and all she had learned and headed out to change a few things.
