I want to read a true story of someone who had to go through very bad things and came out victorious in the end. Please no holocaust. Recent would be good too, something that will help me to feel grateful for what I have. Suggestions?

In a Heart Beat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving, by Sean and Leann Touhy. The story behind the movie The Blind Side (Michael Oher).

One Call Away, by Brenda Warner (Kurt Warner's wife). Powerful story, strong lady.

Seabiscuit, by Lauren Hillebrand. Not just about the horse, but all the people involved. One of the best non-fiction writers ever!

When things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron.

She's a Buddhist nun, and only a part is dedicated to her actual story (her husband cheated on her. She threw a rock at his car, then converted to Buddhism ) but it is really inspirational and gives exercises for coping with "misfortunes and challenges"

Not sure if its what you are looking for, but I found "Turning Hurts into Halos" by Robert Schuller a very inspirational read.
