OMG!!!
I've always wanted to get into swing dancing...did it many years ago....so I began lessons recently....and I'm working on all kinds of dancing!! Turns out.....I love salsa!!! Love, love, love it! Still trying to get my hips swinging a bit less geriatric-ly
, but I am LOVING DANCING!!
I'm taking private and group lessons and having the time of my life! I'm seriously dancing....Every. Single. Day!
Anyone else into dancing? That started later in life? Moo, I know you dance....anyone else?

Does wishing I can dance count? I just can't, I stiffen right up and can barely move my feet.

Awww, sd......
I was afraid I'd be a klutz. I am, with some moves. Other moves are so natural....surprised the heck out of me! If you ever get a chance, try it! A good teacher can make all the difference!

It is in how you step.
I am into it. Started 18 months ago. I'm loving West Coast Swing at the moment.

Yeah, Moo, I know!!! It cracks me up that my instructor (a great guy, my age) swings his hips so gracefully, and it still feels clunky to me.
Apparently in STL, Imperial Swing is big...which is East Coast Swing, I think. And there's a great swing club here, but I'm too chicken to go until I get better...although they offer lessons, too.
I did swing years ago, when I worked for the USO...but I was a spring chicken then.
It just cracks me up that it took me sooo many years to get back into dancing....oh, how I wish I had sooner!

Oh man, I've been thinking about this lately. I've gone to some singles dances the last couple of months put on by a Meetup group I belong to.
Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect when I take lessons? What does it usually cost? How do you find a good instructor? (Note: I'd have to opt for private lessons because I have two left feet
)

I love dancing, but preferably when no one's watching. That's a whole other host of embarrassing stories.

PA53,
Well, I just googled "dance instruction"! Like I said above, there's a huge swing dance club here in town, and they do offer lessons, but I wanted one-on-one lessons, because I was sure I'd be a klutz!
I found a studio in my town and took their intro $25 lesson. I loved it so much I signed up for their package of 4 private and 4 group lessons. It was pricey....over $300.
My instructor is so great....he breaks down each dance into smaller "groups" of set. And he really listens to what I want to learn.. To give me a good foundation, we've worked on fox trot, swing, cha-cha, rumba, salsa and waltz.
If you are in the STL area, PM me, and I'll give you the name of my studio!

I dance and love it. Learning tango, samba is next on the list and I grew up dancing salsa and merengue. It gets me out of my head and I live it.

Thanks SM2012. I'm gonna G it right now lol.

Nah, unfortunately I live in OH. I've wanted to get out of here for ages due to the shitty weather. I've always had a dream of moving to Costa Rica. Had to put that and more on the back burner due to circumstances. It's all good though... actually other than the weather I'm doing great!
Thanks again for the info.

That's funny, Moo!
I have wanted to do this forever. Took a few lessons locally once upon a time with xpos. He quit after 3 or 4, saying he just couldn't do it and didn't even want to. Refused to practice at home and would not go back. Since it was for couples, I had to quit too. I hope to take some lessons now.

I've always enjoyed dancing...but I've never gotten into the couples dancing except for some easy C&W stuff a long time ago. I danced in Jazz company for a few years in my early-mid 20's. That was a lot of fun - even got to dance onstage at an amusement park. Just can't move like I used to though...age and back operations do that to you I guess. It would be fun to pick up couples dancing.

I've taken about a year's worth of swing lessons, but spread out over several years. I love it.
I want to start Salsa soon!

SM2012, I've always wanted to learn, but there's no dance classes around here, other than the type of dance schools my daughter attends.

There are actually many dance clubs in my area....most offer cheap weekly lessons for non-members....if you're a member, it's less. All offer open dance nights, and you never HAVE to have a partner. I'm at a studio, so it's a bit more, but there ARE more affordable alternatives!
If you're at all interested.....DO IT! I thought I'd be an idiot....maybe I am, but I'm picking it up well, and I love it! Like I said, I'm mostly interested in swing, but was totally shocked at how much I like salsa!!
It's funny.....at my first lesson my instructor was of course holding my hands the entire time...even when we were walking around the room. Add him being a cutie, and I was flustered beyond belief! It's been AGES since I've just HELD HANDS with a man! It felt so intimate!!! I mean, I really was flustered, even though it was completely non-sexual, or even flirt-ish (he's married). Now, it's fine....I've danced with several guys at the studio.
So, if you're on the bus, be careful!
Eta: But that's part of what makes dancing fun....you feel beautiful and graceful...or at the very least, fun! Guess it gets those endorphins going.

There is a meetup.com group locally for salsa & swing. I have played with the idea of joining one of these days. I have danced latin before, but I'm told I'm incapable of surrendering the lead to the man. And I suppose that's true.
At least when it comes to dancing! Lord, there's probably more time I need to spend on my counselor's couch...
