Does anyone know what is going on with the circle around the sun today? It looks like a circle rainbow. (please excuse the darkness. My phone doesn't photograph the sun well.)

It's called a solar halo.

Ice crystals in the .... um... stratosphere? (Google free guess..)

Tred posted 5/14/2013 12:11 PM

solar halo - a luminous halo parallel to the horizon at the altitude of the sun; caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere

It's just nice to see the sun. It's cold today. My question is, what is that little dot on the left side?

stilllovinghim posted 5/14/2013 12:13 PM

"Its called a halo (also a nimbus or Gloriole) and can occur around the sun, moon, or any other bright object (such as street lights).
When it appears around the sun its because sunlight is refracted by tiny ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.
It happens often on cold clear days (and often around the moon when its close to full in early spring and late fall).
You can see it on cold foggy nights around streetlamps as well."

Wow! You guys are fast!

Thank you very much. It is chilly here.

SD - I have no clue what the dot is.

Some guy in the cvs parking lot was like crouching down taking a picture. He said, "It's a spaceship. The world is ending."

We've had some really powerful solar flares over the last few days with more to come. Don't be surprised to see a halo, aurora, etc.

TrulyReconciled posted 5/14/2013 12:59 PM

The 'dot' is likely an internal reflection flare in the lens that took the photo.

I've been stuck inside all day with sick kids. Went to go look....note to self....don't stare at the sun.

MovingUpward posted 5/14/2013 13:24 PM

Looks like you took a flash photograph of your own eye.

jo2love posted 5/14/2013 13:25 PM

I did the samething.
I hope your kids feel better.

Moo - It does look like that, but I promise it's not my eye.

Party pooper! I was hoping it was a planet.

I think that dot is a space photobomber. It made its way into mine too.
