Does anyone know what is going on with the circle around the sun today? It looks like a circle rainbow. (please excuse the darkness. My phone doesn't photograph the sun well.)

It's called a solar halo.

solar halo - a luminous halo parallel to the horizon at the altitude of the sun; caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere

It's just nice to see the sun. It's cold today. My question is, what is that little dot on the left side?

"Its called a halo (also a nimbus or Gloriole) and can occur around the sun, moon, or any other bright object (such as street lights).

When it appears around the sun its because sunlight is refracted by tiny ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.

It happens often on cold clear days (and often around the moon when its close to full in early spring and late fall).

You can see it on cold foggy nights around streetlamps as well."

Wow! You guys are fast!

Thank you very much. It is chilly here.

SD - I have no clue what the dot is.

Some guy in the cvs parking lot was like crouching down taking a picture. He said, "It's a spaceship. The world is ending."

We've had some really powerful solar flares over the last few days with more to come. Don't be surprised to see a halo, aurora, etc.

The 'dot' is likely an internal reflection flare in the lens that took the photo.

I think that dot is a space photobomber. It made its way into mine too.
