My son is in the 4th grade. I usually go on all field trip with both of my kids, only missed a few over the years. If I didn't get picked to go on the trip I would just drive myself out and pay admission to wherever the class was going. This has never been an issue. As an 'unofficial chaperone' you simply weren't in charge of a group but still helped.
With all the crazy events of the world the school now requires anyone who has interaction with the kids have FBI/State clearances...not a problem, got'em.
The 4th grade never asked for fieldtrip parents so I figured I would just drive out like any other year. My H and I met with the principal the day before to make sure this was ok. The principal stated that he could not stop me from paying admission at a public place but I was not to be in charge of kids. NO PROBLEM. I told the principal that I wasn't comfortable with the 1 to 13 adult/child ratio. He understood.
I get there and I am rudely told by one teacher that I wasn't permitted to be with any of the kids including my own son even though the school has a copy of my clearances. I informed the teacher that I had a meeting with the principal yesterday and he is fully aware that I am on the trip. She tells me that the principal said he has no recollection of said meeting. I call the principal, he remembers the meeting but now tells me that I am to keep my distance from the children including my own son.
I am a frequent flyer at the school, this makes no sense to me at all. At least my child's homeroom teacher stuck up for me and said the situation was getting out of hand. I did manage to enjoy the day with my son but was under the close eye of the rude teacher.
I told the teacher that I refused to be rude to a child that asked me to hold their bag or take their picture... But if they needed to go anywhere away from the group I would kindly tell them to ask another adult.
I got a call when I got home from the trip from one of teachers asking me for every detail of my meeting with the principal and the comments from the rude teacher.
THe teacher that called me explained how the school is trying so hard to be secure and all the wrinkles aren't out of the system yet.
What a day!
