Hurricane season starts on Saturday. This year is predicted to be more active than average. Anyone living on or near the coast should have a hurricane plan in place and be prepared to evacuate if a storm is projected to make landfall nearby and rising water is a concern.

I generally use 100 MH winds as a guide as to whether to evacuate or not, but it is really rising water that kills. The mantra used by the Houston area Emergency Management is "Run from the water, Hide from the wind".I have seen several cases where a slow moving Tropical Storm caused many deaths because of flooding and people could not get out.

Please always follow the guidelines of government officials when an evacuation is ordered for your area. Remember - Superstorm Sandy was not a hurricane when it made landfall.

Hurricane escape plan...excuse me, but

I went to Galveston Island yesterday evening to watch the sun set. It took me almost 4 hours to get back to Houston. If a hurricane hits, I'm not trying to go anywhere!

I probably don't have to worry, though. Whenever a disaster hits, I'm out of town.

Umm, remind me to never be where you are not!
