People sneeze in our office and either do say "bless you" or don't say it - I guess depending on their mood that day. People also don't say "thank you" after being told "bless you". Am I just weird for thinking that is totally rude??

Its one of my pet peeves here. If you don't believe it saying it, that's ok don't say it. But if you do say it, then for pete's sake say THANK YOU. Is it that hard??

Or am I just a pet peeve nit picker?

Oh my I am the complete opposite. I don't *get* the whole Bless you thing... I mean a person can be coughing up a lung and we ignore - or we get all in a tither about them exposing their germs to us (how dare they!)... on their death bed and we chit chat. But let a speck of dust get in their nose... or the sun in their eyes so they sneeze and we are all over *blessing* them.

For a while I stopped saying it altogether, but was told I was rude because it is simply a polite custom/gesture and I *should* say it. So I typically do - and I do say thank you if someone says it to me - but I think it's a bunch of hooey.

I had a coworker that got mad if you said it to her because she said it was against her religion but I typically say it and say thank you out of habit. I don't care either way though.

I say bless you and if someone says it to me, I say thank you.

If someone coughs, I say are you ok?

We always say "Bless You" and "Thank You" here at home.

My assistant at school never says it to me or the kids... never once. I find it odd when she doesn't say it.

I say it so automatically I don't think I could stop.

However when someone's coughing it sets my nerves on edge... I can't stand coughing.

I say bless you and thank you- I have a similar peeve- guy at work (catholic same as me) I say bless you to him- he never says bless you to me- sometimes he just keeps on talking to me through my sneeze... BUT if a girl sneezes "bless you"... Maybe I should withdraw my bless yous to him- in my head I'll be like 'yeah how'd you like that- dickhead. now you'll get the consumption' OK, OK so it's not the 19th Century- I don't give a shit it's hayfever season- close enough.

I tend to sneeze three or four times in a row, so I'd rather people just ignore me, so I don't have to thank them three or four times. But I do always say, "Thank you" if they bless me.

I wasn't raised saying it or responding to it. I had one friend who got incredibly offended if I didn't say TY so I learned that and do it now, but I still won't say bless you. Guess I don't see why.

Because when you sneeze, your soul is briefly exposed. If no one blesses you, the devil can steal it!

Cally60 posted 6/6/2013 17:54 PM

I don't say it. I was taught that it was rude to draw attention to such things as sneezing and that one should simply save the perpetrator from embarrassment by carrying on as though nothing had happened.

I don't actually know whether I respond to a "bless you" with thanks, but since my automatic "thank you" response setting is on "high", I think that I probably do.

Multiple sneezing is my favorite. I always cycle through different languages, gesundheit, salud, salute, arroghutyun. All are just to wish good health which seems fitting.

My French mate says-

vos souhaits
or
tes souhait
then if you sneeze again-
vos amours

Yeah, SO never says "Bless you" he always says gesundheit. I cycle between bless you and gesundheit.

That is awesome! I could answer back with a thank you, gracias, merci and tack and arigato!

Um no...that's the case for passing gas, not sneezing

Love the varying responses.

I guess its all how we were brought up. I never practiced any sort of religion really, yet it was ingrained in me to always say bless you and thank you and if I don't hear it...I am like this... My kids don't even say bless you and I said it to them all the time while they were growing up. Weird.
