Food Suggestions?

I'm taking my 6ft tall (and growing) "baby" boy to an upcoming NASCAR race and will be carrying a backpack sized cooler. I'd prefer to spend less money on food at the track, letting DS use more of the budgeted funds for his keepsakes (hats, shirts, etc).

Beyond chips and fruit, what are some tasty suggestions for food/snacks that are good eaten cold/room temp?

I have no problem prepping the food a day or so ahead of time.

Thanks!

Edited to add:

We're going with a group (bus trip), so we'll be out from 5am until at LEAST 9pm in the evening.

I'd say proteins to keep him full. Would he like summer sausage or pepperoni sticks? Hard boiled eggs? Nuts of some kind?

Thanks Meta!

Yes, I am steering more along the lines of meal-type foods rather than snacks (so he/we stay full).

Sausage sounds great, but DS wont touch eggs or nuts. Those are great ideas for me though.

@JRC - PB&J or fried chicken (mmmmm....cold fried chicken) sound really good.

@Aubrie - Thank you! DS wont touch hummus, but that'd be a great snack for me!

Well dang. Make it hard on us Gaby.

How about wraps? Tortillas with meat/cheese/whatever else in them? Depending on what he likes, they can be pretty filling.

And for the record, while kale chips probably wouldn't make the NASCAR trip, they are fabulous!

LOL Aubrie!

My kiddo is a little "plain jane" when it comes to food.

He'll try a lot of things, but his tried and true are generally understated meat and potatoes type foods.

That's one reason I'm looking for suggestions! He's a tough sell and I dont want to have to pack 2 coolers of food to keep us both happy for the day.

Pringles. The tube makes them easy to pack.

ETA dammit, after reading all the responses I forgot you said beyond chips.

Umm...........granola bars, protein bars, frozen fruit smoothies will melt down and be ready to drink after a few hours, frozen grapes, nuts and trail mix.....

I LOVE the smoothies idea!

I have a couple of tall, narrow thermos bottles that would pack well.

DS is a HUGE smoothie fan, so that will definitely work well for us.

I think we're looking at fried chicken for the big meal item, smoothies, PB&J as backup second meal, and some light snacks (chips/veg sticks) for munching.

Thanks everyone!

Don't forget water!! If you fill plastic bottles halfway and freeze them on their sides, you can still drink while they thaw, and they'll help keep everything cool longer.

I am going to add some HB eggs for my own breakfast and already planned to pack some homemade beef jerky and granola.

Thanks Ama! I'm on this one already since this is what we do when we go camping. It creates a lot less mess in the cooler!
