Skunk!

I was walking the dogs tonight, and they ran into the woods barking.

And......apparently there was a skunk in the brush. The good news is that only one of the 4 got a direct hit.

Luckily, I always keep a deodorizer on hand ( one of my long gone dogs would have a skunk incident every year). The bad news is that I used the last of the bottle tonight on Norm.

He is banished to the yard until I can get some more. Tomorrow looks like a bath day. I still smell the slight rankness of it. Ugh

Ps totally misread this as "skank" at first and thought it belonged in general

Mutiny at the house of williesmom. Everyone except Willie spent the night outside.

They are not happy and not talking to me.

Willie is thrilled to be the "chosen one". He the only one that I can trust not to pee on the floor if the dog door is disabled while he's inside.

Best formula EVER to de-skunk animals:

1 qt fresh hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

Mix the two in an open-top contained (large bowl works well) because it will foam.

Scoop the foam off the top and rub it into the fur where the animal was hit. Then wask the animal with the rest of the mixture before washing with regular animal shampoo.

This neutralizes the smell almost immediately- it's like MAGIC.

Some people like to add a teaspoon or so of dishwashing liquid or shampoo right to the peroxide/baking soda mix but I've never done that.

If you have animals always keep a relatively fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your house and you'll never be stuck with a skunked dog in the middle of the night.

PS- DO NOT try to store this mix in a closed container, it will explode.

Your welcome

I can't smell skunk. I have never been able to smell skunk, and wouldn't be able to describe what it smells like. Is there something wrong with me?

I had a friend who liked the smell of skunk! But not being able to smell it at all...? ...Um, I'm gonna say that there is something wrong with your olfactory senses! And boy are you lucky!

Taking notes on the hydrogen peroxide solution! Thanks!

I've heard buttermilk and tomato juice will deoderize skunk smells.

I've been lucky enough to never have to use it tho.

I love corgis (miss my Tigger ) but it's probably not a bad thing that they're not talking to you; they're pretty mouthy

Good luck with the deskunking!

Dark Inertia, sbout 1 in every 1000 people lack the ability to smell mercaptan

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/nosek.html

which is the skunk smell. It's also similar to the odorant put in Natural Gas do that people can detect leaks. Can you smell that? It's pretty important that you know the answer to that for safety reasons.

Im also curious if you have an inability to smell garlic or coffee.

Eranda - that's the same recipe I used for years with my dogs. I always added a little Dawn dish soap to help it suds up.

Dark Inertia - you are lucky! Just being around a dog that took a direct hit will make your eyes water and burn.

Actually, I cannot smell natural gas, either. I know this because there are several times a pilot light was left on and my SO came from the other room saying he smells gas. This happened a few times while I was with my ex as well. I can definitely smell garlic and coffee... which I love both smells!!

I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but my mom cannot smell skunk, either.
