Irritable Bowel Syndrome... ugh.

I haz it... I don't like it...

I took DS to the movies today and we had our usual popcorn and then, of course, I had my usual stomach cramps after popcorn...

It even has a name... Popcorn stomach.

I'm sick of my stomach being sick all the time.

I'm right there with you, but I never do know what food or drink will cause my issues on a day to day basis. I have found that a few days of clear liquids and meditation do help the stress stomach. Then after day two I'm able to introduce rice and salads into the mix. Have you tried the high-fiber, low-fat regime, with lots of water?

As for drinking... I almost never drink anything other than water.

High fiber is a problem for me... too much fruit and fiber and I'm back to bad stomach. I do stay as low fat as possible.

Lately it seems like everything is setting off my stomach.

I hear ya. I get popcorn stomach.

And just like you both I never know what is going to set me off. Except greasy food, spicy food, too much and bam!

A favorite comment in my house is "mom has vegtable poisoning again." Can't ever eat raw veggies.

I've had it several yrs now. After going thru the usual round of insurance gougings(can't remember how many 'scopes I had...) with absolutely no relief at all, FWW found some stuff called Intestinal Bowel Soother at the health nut store, I take one a day. It's a lifesaver, has about 75 diff things in it like willow bark, Chinese tarot root, eye of newt, but something in there keeps me off the toilet and my stomach un-knotted.

My DD25 haz it too - onset when she was a teen. It's fueled by her endometriosis and of course, stress and anxiety. Vicious circle.

Poor thing always has to know she has access to a restroom and so many foods trigger it.

IBS sucks!

I haz it to.. for years now.. Mine is more spastic colon ( at least that's what the docs diagnosed it) started when DS1 (almost 21YO) was a baby & it was horrible... never knew what was going to set it off.. I can't tell you how many times WH had to pull into a fast food place, gas station.. you name it as I was doubled over in pain..

I do have to say that I have narrowed the foods down to what triggers is so my attacks aren't as severe.. and I usually get an attack if I eat my trigger food 2 days in a row , my trigger foods are tomato products, milk (but never ice cream ) & peanuts..

When I was on Effexor for depression/anxiety (during WH A) the pill helped my IBS a lot!!

good luck.. tummy troubles suck!

I have both IBS-D and IBS-C and like others said I never know what is going to set it off. At one point it was so bad that I never had a normal BM. The only thing I found that helped was cutting out all processed foods. I eat tons of fresh fruits, veggies, and meat. The checkout lady at the grocery store hates me.

This past month I had to cut back on my grocery bill due to unexpected car repairs which means I had to eat more processed foods and my symptoms have all come back.

Going to the Health Nut Store today!!!

I have both IBS-D and IBS-C. Been stuck in a D cycle for several months now.

I have an Rx for dicyclomine to ease cramps, but it makes me dizzy and sleep so I don't take it until I have an absolute need.

Even with the cramps tho I'd rather be on the D side because the C side is worse.

I've had it for 29 years. Prolonged stress makes it worse. Greasy food makes it worse. Not eating regularly makes it worse. I've dealt with it, but I feel for you- having a sick crampy stomach and worrying about having to use the bathroom in public SUCKS. I've been known to come home from work, or leave wherever I was at in order to avoid that.

But it's not the end of the world, you can live with it.

I feel for you jrc and everyone else dealing with this. My mom has it and she hates it. She's had to adjust her diet SEVERAL times until she's finally found a diet that works for her. I don't think she suffers as much anymore as I don't hear her complain about it. I fear I may end up with the same thing since my mom and I both have anxiety issues. I absolutely LOVE movie popcorn and often feel crappy after.

I went to the Whole Food store looking for the supplement 64fleet mentioned... they didn't have it.

I have been keeping my diet pretty bland lately and it's settling down a little bit.

Eranda... I've been living with this for years and years... since my 20's. I know I can live with it... Just being whiny right now.

I highly recommend this book by an experienced nutritionist who has helped many people I know.. It includes great recipes.

Corn is a common allergen and most corn is now genetically modified which creates more gut problems for sensitive individuals.

Ok, pardon my stupidity here, but I was diagnosed with this when I was 18, and the doc said nothing about diet, meds, different types of IBS..... I'm thinking I got screwed somehow. Could anyone catch me up here?

IL is right. Aside from the genetic modification going on (which is uber scary!), movie corn is a toxic bomb....

The only place I occasionally indulge is at the artsy cinema where they use real corn and real butter.

At home I kettle pop in olive oil with organic corn and dress with olive oil instead of butter. It's yummy and is actually considered real food....

OK the Butt Nurse is going to offer some expert opinion and ideas here. Take it or leave it, but here are the things that I have found helped improve most folks IBS.

1. Probiotics. These can really help a lot. Yes the actual pills, no not just eating the Activia or yogurt. One that is made of slightly different good flora that patients tend to respond the best to is Florastor. Start off with one tab twice a day for a couple of weeks, then down to one a day. (I have had many patients have a complete remission or resolve just by doing this).

2. Keep a food/stool journal. What you have eaten, and when you go, how you go, and consistency of go. (Yes yuck, but this can help you figure your trigger foods). One thing to keep in mind, is the thing that you just ate, is not necissarily the trigger food. Frequently it's the meal prior to the event that caused it!!! Remember it takes 24-48 hours from food to get from entrance to exit.

3. If you cannot find a specific cause, and the probiotics don't help then of course there is the Gluten free diet. Try it for 2 weeks at least. Even though you may not have true Celiac, you can have a sensativity to it.

4. A low dose antidepressant can be used to keep things at an even keel. One of the favorites that is used for this is used for chronic Migraine treatment, and a variety of other issues. Amitryptilline or elavil. Low cost, few side effects, and helps most people sleep better.

Obviously there is a huge mind gut connection, and the greater amount of stress you are under makes the IBS worse. so things like Yoga, medetation, etc can also improve it.
