It's that time of year again. My kitchen has been invaded by ants. So off to the store for ant traps. They were out of my preferred type with borax so I bought the other. I'm pretty sure the ants were laughing at me and ignoring the traps. Well, saw one too many ants this morning so I made a visit to the hardware store to buy the borax traps. That stuff is like crack for the ants - the traps are like little ant resorts at the moment. Pretty freaking gross but at least I know they will work. Tomorrow will be ant disposal day at my house.

Moral of this story - get the borax traps. No posers.

Gawd, I hate ants! I can't think of any possible meaning for their existence, well, other than to feed anteaters, which I like. I'm sure we could find a substitute. Wait, we already have a substitute; anteaters eat termites. They are almost useless; least they break down decaying wood.

Good grief; an ant rant!

Can you imagine having an anteater as a pet? That would be AWESOME.

Ya it would be...until winter. Then you'd have to breed your own ants... People I worked with thought I was crazy for breeding my own mealworms for my geckos so I guess it would fit me

I discovered ants in my laundry room. Kittens have had a blast pouncing on them and DD kept yelling "mommy bug" them he'd step on it. We also have small moths in the house. Kittens have been leaping for them.

I used to do the terro, but I got worried about the cat getting into it. Now I use cinnamon to repel ants. And it works FANTASTICALLY!

Ack kernel - hope you get all those buggers out fast. I swear they build their armies so dang fast.

Moths? Uhoh! Make sure you hide your wool, the wool moths are out in Ontario right now!

How cool that cinnamon works like that. Do you just lay a perimeter of it down? My MIL is looking for a safe way to keep them out of her home!

I've used cinnamon too, but it makes a big mess (and in my house, that's saying a lot ) My problem with ants was in my electronics, especially the computers. Why do they love electricity??

I think they are coming from the parrot food. They are all around the bird cage. They are small but really annoying.

I second the "coolness" factor. I'll have to try that :)

It's really clear where the ants are coming in to my house - through two windows and one door, all in the kitchen. I sprinkled a line of cinnamon in the window sills, and then across the threshold of the porch door. I think the scent blocks them from following their chemical trail.

After a couple of days, I vacuumed it up, and the ants never came back.

I'll have to try the cinnamon next time. I don't have pets or little kids so the Terro isn't a risk at my house. The ants are all coming in the kitchen window. The kitchen window that is painted shut (not by me) and the Hulk couldn't get it open. Somewhere there is an ant-size hole that I haven't caulked.

Thanks! I have a problem with sugar ants on my kitchen counter. I've been tempeted to wipe the counter down with Raid but I really refer not to risk it. I will try the cinnamon.

Bleach works wonders on ants. It does not keep them away but it does immediately kill them. I already use a counter top cleaner with bleach, so when i see a line of ant I just get that and spray them. Then I get traps and try to figure out where they are coming from. I never heard of cinnamon, I will try that next time!

The ants won't cross the cinnamon line, but my dogs loved it so they'd snuffle around in it and spread it all over the place.

ming56 posted 6/29/2013 17:58 PM

Well my words may hold no appeal when I say that I don't kill anything, including insects, but when I lived in Las Vegas used to struggle with ants coming into the house and getting into the cat food bowls. My solution was to seal off the areas on the floorboard and then when I found an area by the kitchen window they utilized to gain access, I started to leave a trace of sugar just outside the window, then slowly extended the line further and further away from the house until they grew accustomed to finding sugar in one of the garden borders and slowly decreased the amount once they stopped coming in the window. Once in a great while they would start to encroach on the kitchen again, but the sugar trail worked every time until the last couple of years I never saw them in the house.

I know this sounds weird, but Spray n' Wash is awesome for getting rid of ants. Just spray and wipe where they walk and it erases their scent trail. You can also spray around the base of your door/window and they won't come in. And, like cinnamon, it smells good.

I just call "teraminax".

gahurts posted 6/30/2013 11:10 AM

WOW!!! Talk about effective. I would wipe up a bunch of ants only to have more show up a few hours later. Yesterday I cleaned the countertops really well and sprinkled a line of cinnamon where the counter meets the wall and we have not seen a single any since.

Yay!!!

We use the liquid ant traps! It's like an oasis... they all come in and carry the poison back to the next to DIE! <that's my evil DIE YOU BASTARDS laugh>
