My period is constantly late. I've been late before but not on every period. I went to gyn last time and they told me it was stress...really that's all I get? I've had weight gain with no significant changes in diet or exercise. Emotions going up and down constantly. Right now I'm almost 2 months late. Last I remember having my period is early to mid may. Pregnancy tests came out negative but now I'm laying here swallowing over and over to overcome sudden nausea. Can all this really just be stress related?

Stress can cause weight gain and irregular cycles. Maybe take another pregnancy test to ease your mind.

I will tomorrow morning. I haven't been sleeping well either...insomnia for the past few weeks, not even getting my normal 4 hours of sleep anymore. If I do catch sleep it's during the day for a couple hours. Mind you I am tired but I close my eyes and nada. If this is all stress its horrible.

Have you tried melatonin to help you sleep? Stress really wreaks havoc on our bodies. My sister loses hair when stressed.

Sending you hugs, healthy mojo, and hope for a good night's sleep.

No but I will try it. I thought I was coping with the ups and downs and all the sudden family and dog issues added on top. Add on the intense back pains for the past few weeks and trying to get a position as an at home call center rep and I'm all over the place. Thanks jo2love I appreciate all the advice.

If you are worried that the OTC preg. tests are wrong, you can always go to a local clinic and get a free preg. test without involving your Gyno again.

And yes stress can really do a doozy on your body.

I once missed my period for four months in a row. Pregnancy tests kept coming back negative.

I went to my doctor and she ran a bunch of tests than came back normal. It was during a very stressful time in my life and the doctor said that the female reproductive system runs on a very delicate balance and that it doesn't take much to throw it off.

Four months later my period came back as suddenly as it disappeared.

Would PCOS be a possibility for you? The weight gain and irregular periods could be a result of PCOS.

I have PCOS. I was regular for the first 6 or so years that I had periods. Then, my periods started coming later and later, till, well, I now I don't get them at all unless I'm on hormones.

I brought up my symptom of being later and later with my periods to my Drs, and they brushed it off as stress during college, stressed with this, stressed with that.

Turns out, I really have a medical reason behind my lack of ovulation. Once I wanted to have kids, I was taken more seriously.

I would find someone else that at least is willing to run some basic hormonal tests on you to make sure everything is OK.

One thing I've learned on my journey is that simply relaxing and sleeping at night does not really fix real medical conditions.

I'm also a weird PCOSER, in that weight gain and a lack of periods is my only physical system of PCOS that one can see without running any sort tests. I had the typical string of pearls around my ovaries, and that was the tipping point towards a real diagnosis.

Look up the side effects for prednisone. I don't know how long you have been taking it, or if you got steroid shots with your back, but seriously... look up prednisone. The weight gain for sure can be tied directly to it.

I was going to suggest looking into PCOS too. Worth ruling out. It took me a long time to get my diagnosis because I was quite thin for many years after my cycles went haywire. I had so many other symptoms but they wouldn't look at me seriously because I didn't have weight issues.

It definitely sounds like metabolic syndrome (PCOS) but you also need your thyroid checked. If your gyn is blowing you off see a family medicine doctor.

There's a lot of women here with PCOS experience, Unagie. (Myself included.)

If that's what it is, we've got tons of advice and experience to share.

Thanks guys. I will have to go to a private GYN. The public low cost ones are the ones who never want to run more tests. I just started on the steroids yesterday so that's not the issue. I have no health insurance so this is gonna hit me hard but I need it figured out.

If PCOS is ruled out, you might want to get tested for Cushing's disease. I had it for 7 years and my general practitioner just kept telling me I was fat. I read a magazine article that described the appearance and symptoms, got the appropriate testing and once diagnosed, had the surgery. It's not something you want to let go on for a long time as it will mess up your reproductive cycle long-term.

Be careful what you wish for the most - you may get it.

Thanks woundedwidow I'll ask about all of it. There has to be a reason behind it.
