Starting a pull-cord motor?

I borrowed my neighbor's power washer so I can get my deck ready for painting. I primed it, turned the motor switch on, pulled out the choke, and am finding I am not tall/strong enough to pull the cord out to get the motor started. I am trying very hard to be WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR -- how the heck do I pull this thing to get it to start?! The motor rumbles but doesn't start -- the line sometimes pulls all the way out and sometimes seems to get caught partway (to the point of pulling the machine up if I don't hold it down). My neighbor started it without any difficulty with one good pull yesterday so I know its in working order.

Is it an angle issue, a speed issue, or what? I usually opt for electric appliances so I have no experience with this. Should I just resign myself to finding a big strong man in the neighborhood to do it for me?

Call the neighbor and ask if there is a trick to starting it.

I have an odd weed whacker.. it won't start for anyone else but me. I tell my kids it loves me.

It might be one of those things where you have to pull the choke out then push it in just a little bit until it clicks.

Or maybe the choke is out just a bit too far and it isn't getting any air in the mixture...

It takes practice...lol. Pulled many a pull starter when I was a live aboard. My husband can't ever get the weed whacker to start...first try for me every time. Same with the pressure washer he brought home from work.

It's because you're a gurl

Remember, with power washers you NEVER want the engine running without the trigger pulled on the wand. Pulling the trigger should make it a little easier to start.

Never run a power washer on 'idle' without the water coming out full force for more than a second or two - you'll blow the seals.

I had a guy friend come over and start it. Watching him, I just plain am too short and not strong enough to pull that hard and with that length of cord! (Dammit. I guess I need to get to work with arm weights.) I did do all the power washing on my large deck though, and it looks great!

Thanks for the help.

Chin ups will be better, the constant tension of holding up your body weight will also help to stretch your arms a very small amount.
