What's in your trunk? Don't remember? Go outside, open your trunk and look....come back and report here,...on line,....at SI.
I've got various cloth shopping bags, a sweatshirt, a lawn chair, jumper cables, spare tire with changing gear that goes along with the job, windshield wiper fluid, an umbrella and a blanket.
The contents will change once colder weather appears again.

I don't own a car 
But when I did, way back in the day, I always kept a blanket, a first aid kit, and bags of nonperishable food/bottled water to give out to the homeless who asked for donations on the freeway on ramps.

I keep a very neat car (trunk included!). My trunk's contents include:
Spare tire and tire changing kit
Trunk organizer that currently contains:
Two bottles of water
Hand-crank Flashlight
Blanket
First aid kit
Zip case full of reusable grocery bags
Me - late 40s
DD(27), DS(24, PDD-NOS)
WH#2 (SorryinSac)- Killed himself (May 2015) in our home 6 days after being served divorce docs.
XWH #1 - legally married 18yrs. 12+ OW (that I know of).
I edit often for clarity/typos.

I keep my shit neat and simple...
jumper cables in a hidden compartment.
that's it mang.
The only difference between a butt kisser and a brown noser is depth perception.

At this time just a cargo blanket, towel, and spare blanket. Usually there is a set of golf clubs, but they are getting new grips right now.

3 baseball bags (bats, cleats, gear, empty gatorade bottles etc..)
4 bookbag/thingys with baseball crap in it (socks, cups, undershirts, empty gatorade bottles etc.. an olfactory cornucopia of ewwwww) 1 belonging to unfoundling#3, the others.. who knows??

3 folding chairs
1 blanket
1 bucket of cleaning supplies
loose balls of varying sports
first aid kit
mommy first aid kit (tampons, change of clothes, legal drugs, hair clips/ties, non melty candy, sunscreen)
emergency roadside kit
*will look this way until baseball season ends...which is never I think

Just got back from a week long vacation and haven't really cleaned it out yet.
Milk crate with various tools, towels, etc
Box with the documents from my Dads estate
Empty laundry basket that was filled with papers to be recycled
Various straps and towing apparatuses because I used a bunch of different trailers last week
Subway Monsters U lunchbox filled with rocks from Ds

I don't have a trunk - just the space behind the 3rd row of seats. At the moment it contains recycling, recycling, and more recycling.

No trunk but a small space behind my third row seat:
1st aid kit
Blanket
Jumper cables
cleat feet- attach to shoes for walking on slippery surfaces(for work)
Kickboxing gloves- you never know when you need to punch someone.

No trunk but a space behind the seats in my Jeep Cherokee. I have:
a big set of tools
a hi-lift jack
A tow strap
a collapsible dog water bowl
a set of jumper cables,
some TP
and a small shovel. :)

I have a 4 door truck.
rifle behind back seat and
tie downs
WH thinks I need these in the event I see a coyote on the way to work and I pull over to shoot it (it's gone by then!)
Tie downs in case I have to tie it down. Huh?
That's about it.
I keep a really clean truck.

In my Jeep:
* 2 picnic blankets in their own fabric carrying bags
* Six folded pool towels. There are usually ten or more
* Two pool noodles
* First aid kit strapped onto the roll bar
* My toolbox, strapped to a metal loop
In Mr. T's minivan:
* Two spears with horsehair decoration
* Two staves of different lengths
* Two broadswords with silk scarves tied to the handles
* A gym bag with at least two gis and a pair of martial arts shoes
* Ace bandages. He just tosses rolled-up ones back there willy nilly, "just in case"
* A big cardboard box which he regularly refills with heavy plastic lidded to-go coffee cups when his desk at work gets too crowded with them

No trunk. I have a small SUV.
All that's in the back compartment is my golf bag loaded with my clubs, shoes, balls, tees, towels, and some h20.
My yoga mat is in the back seat along with my back-up umbrella.
That's about it.
ETA: Thinking I should at minimum get some kind of safety kit in there.
