Thursday night, I was messaged out of the blue on Plenty of Fish.

"Hi I like beautiful curvy women - would you like to see Lyle Lovett with me Saturday night?"

I have no idea what possessed me, but with about 17 seconds of thought (long enough to look at his photos and read his profile), I said "Sure - why not?"

Usually I won't even have coffee with an OLD without his last name, phone number and enough identifying information that I can determine pretty much with whom I'm dealing, so I'm not sure what the hell got into me.

This guy immediately sent me his real name and his phone number.

"I bought two tickets and my son backed out. I read your profile and see you like Lyle, and you looked nice. I'm glad you said yes".

He's 58, lives about 10 miles away and has a long-established dental practice. I made a few phone calls and did some Googling. He's a widower since 2009 (confirmed). Found his FB page - pretty open to the public and nothing weird there. Scanned some of his friends - mostly professional people and family.

So hey. I'm going to see Lyle Lovett. I'm meeting him at the venue at 6:30.

Woot

Very cool!

Make sure you bring condoms.

No condoms needed - I'll be wearing ugly underwear on purpose.

And Lyle Lovett wouldn't be enough for me to give it up on the first date. Get me Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Terry Williams, Billy Bremner (the original "Rockpile") along with Elvis Costello, Wreckless Eric and the resurrected Ian Dury and Joe Strummer and then *maybe* we'd be able to talk.

:D

I just figured you might have another "why not?" moment

And didn't you know? Murphy's law when applied to dating quickly turns ugly undies against us...

It was a lot of fun. Lyle Lovett was (as always) stupendous.

Mystery Dentist was very charming as well. All in all a very pleasant evening.

If he can bring Joe Strummer back from The dead, I might put out too.

Great. I'm glad it worked out. Will there be a second date?

No - no second date. The "not into it-ness" was on both sides.

But I'm glad I took the chance.
