Israel -- What to see? What to do?

I am going to Israel for 6 days. I will have 3 - 4 completely free of obligations.

I will have access to a car. I might consider a tour/group option for some things.

What is the most worth my time? There are so many things with historical significance that I would love to see I'm sort of at a loss.

But that's just a lot of water
Underneath a bridge I burned
And there's no use in backtracking
Around corners I have turned

Thanks click

I travel for work so I'm a bit jaded. In fact the thought of the long plane flight has me considering staying home *sigh* Part of TGs training for his new job is in Israel. We've had date nights around the world since he travels for work also. He will be gone 4 -6 weeks total so we're having date night there. The other options to visit during that time are very unappealing!

I'll talk to MrH and get some suggestions. He went there for 10 days I think and it made a huge impact on him.

We were in Jordan for two months, I loved it. I wish we could go back and live there but the job sitch isn't working out. I could give you lots of suggestions for Jordan. We meant to go to Israel but since it was around Christmas time, we decided to wait until most of the pilgrims had left after the new year. By that time, violence had escalated so we didn't. So stay safe.

I will say, try to get to the Dead Sea. Some people love it, some hate it. I loved it. The salt keeps you buoyant, the oils keep your skin soft. Just don't go if you have a paper cut or blisters. I had one small one and OUCH!

Are you interested in religious sites, or general historically significant sites?

DD is there now and coming home tomorrow night. She did a ton of stuff.

I know she loved swimming in the Dead Sea and she did a sunrise hike at Mt Masada that she said was incredible. She also enjoyed shopping at the market in Jerusalem. Do you want me to PM you her itinerary so you can get an idea of all the places she went? She absolutely loved all of it.

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

I'm a big fan of private tours. They are a bit pricier but you can get a lot in at once and then you have your bearings and more time to explore sights that interest you at your leisure. If you are interested I can send you a PM.

OMG; I'm so jealous! I doubt 3-4 days will be enough time, but you'll have a wonderful time!

This does make a difference.

I would say definitely the old city, the Sea of Galilee, Masada, The Dead Sea, the Israel Museum, Western Wall, Mahane Yehuda (Jerusalem produce market), Yad Vashem (Holocaust Museum). I also HIGHLY recommend going with a tour group or hiring a guide. Having a car is not really an advantage in the cities. There is not a lot of parking and no easy ways to get around. Out of the cities it is easier driving (Masada, Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee areas). The guides know how to get you in, best times to go, what to pay, etc. Having to figure out all these things by yourself would be way too time consuming IMHO. I remember when we went a couple who had rented a car were so excited to go to Bethlehem and we had just come from there with our tour group. Certain people (Christians/Jews) just can't go there without being accompanied by certain others (tour guides). At least not easily.

We were there for 11 days and were going from 8:00 a.m until 6:00 p.m. every day! We came back to our hotel, ate dinner then went to bed exhausted. Someone wore a pedometer and figured we walked 5 miles everyday. But it was oh so wonderful! I would go again in a heartbeat!

When will you be there?

Make sure you bring clothing that covers your knees and elbows if you wind up going to one of the holy areas. The group DD was with was told to keep it in their backpacks to change into quickly if they needed to.

I think she only had to put it on once, when they went into an old synagogue in Tel Aviv.
