I asked here a few months ago abut ideas for jobs given my education and experience. I used to teach but didn't want to go back in to a traditional classroom.
I was thinking I needed to bite the bullet and sign up as a sub for our county when a friend sent a message about a job she turned down in favor for a FT job.
It's at a county assistance center. I'll be teaching English to teenage girls that are either pregnant or had babies to help them graduate. I'll have 1-15 students, some will need to leave if their babies need them. There's on-site child care.
I'll be working part time, so I'll be home for my kids before and after school. I'll even have Friday's off. Health coverage, sick and vacation days...I'm eligible for them even though I'm part time.
It's funny because I called to ask about the job on Weds and have been gathering my paperwork. I planned to bring it in Monday but they called me to ask for an interview today. The teaching starts Weds so they're trying to push things through. I go on Monday to new teacher training and then to the center to look my environment and decide if I'll take the job.
It's truly praiseworthy how this has all fallen into place. They actually want a teacher like me, one who doesn't want to teach traditionally. It uses my English degree and time teaching JS English as well as my time teaching moms things like breast feeding support and Babywearing. One of my supervisors was also out of the workforce for many years as a SAHM and her first job was in this center.
I'm nervous as heck. This will mean quitting a volunteer position that has been an important part of my recovery and jumping in to teaching a state curriculum for the first time on nearly 14 yrs. It has also given me more confidence. The interview was quick. Within 15 mins they were talking logistics of getting my certification from the state and starting training on Monday. I'll have my own paycheck and I think that will feel good, more equal, KWIM?
I'm so scared but excited. I can't really say it's official yet, but it sure looks like it's happening.
