I had a pair of adult Cardinals nesting not too far outside my window this year....
Today I was in the kitchen and could hear a bird chirping. When I walked through into my office I could see a baby, male Cardinal on the fence just outside the window. I stood still and watched for a few minutes...he was drinking the rainwater off the leaves of the bush, and chirping away. He then jumped across onto the air conditioner in the window so he was right outside the window.
Here I was "eye to eye" with this little guy...his feathers were mainly brown, but some of the vibrant scarlet colour are staring to come through...he had little beady eyes...so cute.
I grabbed my camera off the desk to try get a picture of him and the darn batteries were dead!
By the time I quietly went and got my IPOD he had flown away....
I was happy to spend several minutes "eye to eye" with him and watch the wonder of this little guy....made my day!!!

My family always associates cardinals with my deceased parents giving us a sign they are watching over us. Right after they passed away, I had a male and female cardinal who would sit within 4 feet of me when I went out on the patio and had a cup of coffee. It was very comforting. Glad you got to see this little baby up close and personal.

Love cardinals. Someday I hope to see an albino one.

One doesn't very often see baby cardinals so that must have been an amazing treat. I am envious!

I was babysitting my granddaughters at their house last night. While out in the yard I heard the distinct "chip" of a cardinal, but I couldn't locate him. GD5 caught him at the top of a birch tree. He was beautiful and very vocal. The girls stopped playing to listen to him "talking to his friends".

LOL You Canadians....
I was like don't often see baby Cardinals? Oh, yah....
I have at least 5 pairs of them nesting around the house. The babies are bad when they start flying because they love their reflection on the windows, and they repeatedly smack into them.

Anyway enjoy the little guys. I'm no so sure that they are the presence of past loved ones, or just there to let you know that the ST Louis Cardinals are going to win the world series this year.

I had 4-5 pairs of cardinals nesting around my house for a decade and never once saw a baby. They hide them very well. Mind you, the trees where they nested were quite a way from my windows and I was rarely home during working hours in those days!

He just came back to visit me again....again was not able to get his picture
I have watched the parents disappear into the bushes and knew they had a nest in there, but today was the first time I have seen anything of the babies....I am going to keep my eyes open and watch to see if there is more than this handsome young man!

((FeelsSoRight))...thank you for sharing that with me...I will think of this as my Dad...I miss him so much even after close to 13 yrs...I "feel" his presence around me often, talk to him still...now having the Cardinals I have something to watch and remember....thank you....HUGS

We have several nesting pairs of cardinals near our summer house and have a few babies around every year. This year we have three and think one is male as we've been watching him start to turn red over the last couple of weeks.

I always find the babies entertaining as they're much less skittish than the adults and will come quite close to you--particularly if you scatter some seed on the ground or on an outdoor table.

I've also been interested to see over the years that when the babies are first learning to fly and beginning to come to feeders, it's almost always the daddy with them.

Enjoy watching your little guy.

We have seen a LOT of babies this year. The young ones are quite scraggly, awkward and funny, sometimes their crests are malformed, fall over, or are bifurcated. They can't quite get on the bird feeder properly, they'll sit and watch the other birds of all types and try it several times before they get it.

Later in the summer they get territorial, but when they are young, they don't mind that their siblings are hanging out with them.

Lots of fun.
