She and her bf are currently caring for bf's nephew. The nephew is a teenager and SIL and bf are not yet 30. Nephew has been in school for exactly 1 week and is already suspended for fighting. SIL and bf both work full-time. Instead of leaving nephew home alone in town with an Xbox and cable, they made arrangements for him to be at my MIL's house by 7 am and he has been productively engaged (pulling weeds for everyone on the street) since. No suspension 'vacation' for this kid. Way to go SIL!

Awesome! They need to learn that suspension is not "fun time."

Yup she's got it figured out. Hopefully the nephew will soon get it too. Doesn't take too long for most of them to straighten out when they see their choices are leading them toward that exact carreer path.

When my DS16 was suspended from school for "fighting" we didn't punish him further. When you are jumped on from behind and punched in the face, I am sorry, we are not telling our DS to lie down and take a beating. He defended himself and had witnesses to the fact, however, the school has a stance that no matter the reasons, if you engage physically with a fellow student all are suspended.

SisterMilkshake - they suspend both parties here also. There are some complicated legal reasons for it. However, when a clear aggressor can be identified, he/she is suspended for 3 days and the defender is only suspended for 1. And, usually, if the students seem to be equally responsible, a first offense results in a one day suspension for all involved. Nephew got 3 days and admits he started it. He also has a history of bad behavior/acting out violently - which is why his mother sent him to live with family in the first place.

I figured that the bf's nephew probably has some issues and that most likely he instigated the fight. My point was that not all kids who get suspended for fighting deserve it.
Yes, your SIL deserves a high five for putting the young man to work and not allowing slacking off for the duration of suspension.
