I have an acquaintance that I have known for about 15 years.

Recently she was talking about another woman, her best friend. She said she had always thought that she was better than the bff, but that now bff is doing well in a new relationship and job, and she is really jealous.

I was blown away that she would
a- think she is 'better' than someone she describes as her best friend

b- be upset and jealous that her bff is doing well, because she has always been "better" than her.

FWIW, this woman is mid 30s. And has a lot of material & personal successes. We are not close at all, so I was surprised that she said this to me. I did not really know how to answer...

I don't know how to answer her either, but people with poor self-esteem put others down to make themselves feel better. So it's not a far stretch to see where they might surround themselves with people they think they're better than, for the ego trip. Sounds like that's what she's been doing in this "friendship" all along.

She doesn't sound like much of a friend. I wonder if the bff status is all in her head.

You are important and you matter. Your feelings matter. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Your life matters. Always.

I wish some people would stop treating life like one big competition and instead have genuine happiness and empathy for others.
