Does anyone know what "data usage" refers to on the Verizon phone bill? I am assuming it is Internet use? Looking at the phone bill and seeing tons of "usage" in the middle of the night on WH's phone. Any other possible explanations before I confront him?

Just compared it to my usage, which shows no middle of the night activity. Feeling sick about this . . .

I used to have Verizon and I had the same experience with the middle of the night usage. I called them and they explained to me in very in depth detail that I did not understand. I then said "Tell me in one sentence please" Their response - "The phone is updating itself." Sounded strange to me but I then decided to sleep a little bit lighter and for a good week my H did not get up all during the night and on one night he accidentally left his phone in his car and when I checked the online detail, there was "data usage" going on two to three times a night on average. Hope that helps...

Thanks Chicky. My problem is that last night, for example, it shows usage twice at 1am, at1:53, 1:54, 2:32, 2:36, 3:33, 3:45, 4:29, 4:35, 4:41, 4:42, etc. it seems like a lot for one night, and my usage over the past month doesn't show any usage in the middle of the night, ever. His shows it many nights over the past month.

Where is he (and his phone) when this happens?

I has the data usages in the middle of the nights too, freaked me out, but I *knew* he was in bed with me, no phone. It was Verizon updating. However it did not do it lime you're describing.

To me, it looks like a text/chat program so it doesn't show up as a text message, but data instead.

I noticed this too and was worried. It turned out that Wh has way more apps, esp those stupid app games on his phone. So it was constantly updating. It also had to do with his settings in his phone were set different than mine on how often to update.
Hope this helps and is the case for you as well.

If he has an android phone with apps set to auto update, that could be causing it. Or apps that get info regularly like a weather app.

I think I can posted 8/26/2013 07:23 AM

He could have his email on "push" which means whenever someone (ie LandsEnd ads, etc--ad people always send email in the middle of the night) sends an email, it goes the phone.

My phone is on "manual"--it doesn't go get the email until I tell it to.

When my WH's phone bill showed data usage in the middle of the night..1:54...2:36....3:56....4:23...it was because he was getting up in the middle of the night to check his secret email account..to see if anyone had replied to his craigslist ad..

We did call Verizon, who wasn't much help. I looked further into my account, and did find a night last month where it happened on my phone as well. I really don't think he was up 23 times in six hours . . . And if he had been, he without a doubt would have been tired and grouchy. I hate having yet another uncertainty, though.

Any time an APP updates, anytime an APP gets info (such as weather, stocks, etc), and anytime an email gets delivered (ours are set to deliver when sent) you will have data usage if that is how the events are set to occur. I just got a severe weather warning on mine and of course, it used data. It can get rid of some of the data bits by setting the phone to only update APPS when connected to WI-FI. I did that and my phone data usage dropped a bunch. It also helped my phone as it wasn't busy updating apps when I would try to use it and it is only 3G.

Some data usage is just the phone being a smart phone.

Depends on the volume of data usage. If you're not on the shared data usage plan, each device will have it's own limit. We were on the family plan, so DD#1 for me was when WH's usage hit the 50% max for the month in the first 8 days of the month and Verizon sent out a warning text to all devices on the family plan. So I got a text, my two sons got a text, and WH got a text. Before then, he hadn't ever used even 10% of the allowed usage for his device.

The thing that devoured the data usage was a 2 hour Skype call he made while my son and I were away at a religious conference.

So comparisons for previous use to now helps.
