So... I was painting what I thought was the back view of a couple of weird shaped characters. I was painting with the canvas upside down, and kept cleaning off my brush here and there. When I turned the painting right side up, I almost fainted. This is what I saw:

Where the hell did he come from? I didn't invite him into my painting, but....he makes my painting 5000% better. But....he scares me.

Silly me....I thought I was making a painting of starving people in third world countries. I intended to paint a back view silhouette. I had already titled the painting "Shadows"{ so I guess buddy thought it was OK to slip right in there. Jeeshh.)

I think you've connected with a bigger message. What would happen if you, right now, got out a sketch pad & started sketching some ideas? Or if you create with words, start some free association? What ideas come to mind for you with this guy? Based on the subject, all kinds of ideas come to my mind as to why this fellow has appeared.

I think he started the whole thing. I was rather blocked. Yesterday, I sat in front of a blank canvas and couldn't think of a thing to paint. Not usual for me! So I mixed some watercolours and threw them around on paper. You know, paint something. Anything. Today, suddenly I had the idea to grab a conte stick and sketch two really weird-shaped figures. I think my mystery figure was hiding in there the whole time! When I saw him, I got so freaked, I left the painting, seriously! Like, go away already. I probably should do as you suggest.

I have my ideas as to why he appeared. Tell me your ideas.

He looks like early concept art from Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman," one I remember seeing of Dream himself. Interesting.

Here's the painting so far. I had nothing to do with the face, other than cleaning my brush off here and there while the canvas was upside down.

In my mind (and we all acknowledge that art is subjective!), my impression of what you have so far is the viewer is attempting to observe famine & deprivation from a safe vantage. We're behind. The figures are going away. We're safe from looking at famine head-on.

Only we're not. Famine itself is personified, quite literally. It is looking back at us. We cannot escape it, even when we try. Famine sees us. The suffering of our fellow humans sees us. We have been seen. Will we be targeted next? Eye contact has been made. Do we act? Do we demur & turn away? Do we do something?

That's the first thing I thought when I looked at the original closeup! If Picasso sketched someone from Kiss.

Then the full size one makes it look more mask-like. Downcast. Eerie.

I love it. I don't get a scary evil vibe from him at all. Just poking in to make himself seen. He just wants a place in the world, or a window to look out of. I'm glad you chose to welcome him!
