Moo was watching a Call of the Wildman marathon when she took a break to go downstairs to get something to eat. She came running upstairs screaming that there was a snake in the house and it was striking her cat, Gordon. It was a small, aggressive snake and Waywardson managed to coax it out the sliding glass door after about 40 minutes of us all freaking out. I have one grainy, blurry picture. Does anyone know what this is?

After it was gone Waywardson said, "So, snakes are a sign of change, huh?? Well, I know one thing that's gonna' change: I'm moving outta this effin house!!"

ETA: The pic:

How is the cat?

So, snakes are a sign of change, huh??

Yep... time to change my undies after I saw that thing!!! Holy!!!

The cat is fine. I have four cats and they're all fine. They had it surrounded, but they gladly let H take over. It was striking at them, at H, at the broom...

It's a cropped pic, but the snake was a really small one. For around here, anyway. If you taped two pencils together, it would be about that thick and it was about 16" long.

So, could it have been a diamondback? Bull snake? Gopher snake? It doesn't look like a grass/garter snake, although I'm not the world's best at snake ID.

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 9/2/2013 12:57 PM

We do have Eastern Diamondbacks here. Copperheads... Timber rattlers...

On the non-venomous side, we have king snakes (that's not it), rat snakes, garters, etc.

I'm usually pretty good at ID on a snake, but this one was so small and young, I'm not sure.

ETA: Baby copperheads have a bright yellow tail and this one didn't, so that's been ruled out, too.

Pretty sure Dragn will be along shortly to tell us all about the snake and how cute it is. **shudder**

It looks like a rattler to me ...

snakes are cool ...

gopher snake

caregiver9000 posted 9/2/2013 14:08 PM

It is NOT venomous. You can tell because it has a round eye and not a slitted cat eye.

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 9/2/2013 14:12 PM

I don't think we have gopher snakes here? We're in NC and I checked with the state- it's not on the list of our snakes.

It was really small, so we're thinking it was a baby.

Maybe it was a Gray Ratsnake baby??

Yes, the eye was round and head didn't look like a pit viper. I wasn't sure, though, because it's so small.

I'm thinking it's going to be a Ratsnake. Man, it was TICKED!! I guess facing down four cats will do that to a snake!

Now that I'm able to sit back and think about things, I think the poor snake spent the night in here with our four cats.

My cats were going nuts about something behind the couch. I was alone and assumed it was a spider, so I sprayed behind the couch without pulling the couch out from the wall. Poor snake. I feel pretty bad about that now, but I didn't know, then.

Later, I thought I spotted something in the corner under the curtains and I got a flash light and thought it was just shadows, so I convinced myself that it was nuts to think there's a snake in the house...

Waywardson came home from work and had a crazy story that distracted me from the snake thing, so I never even told him about it. Besides, I was a bit embarrassed.

There was evidence throughout the downstairs that the cats had been chasing something. The laundry doors were open and some things had been knocked off of the dryer.

The poor thing must have been in here all night. It was very glad to go, though, so I don't think it'll be coming back.

The only good snake is a dead snake.

Awwww...that's so sweet. Like it would make much of a difference to me...I would have already been at the Hyatt with the movers at my house getting all my stuff out. The snake can have the house

Ah now I have a shot to buy that wonderful house. I hope TSA won't mind me carrying a snake on a plane.
