My DD is getting married to a US Marine this Saturday. I will provide the toast. Would it not be proper if at the end of the toast I said "HooRah"? Can only a Marine say it?

TrulyReconciled posted 9/25/2013 10:44 AM

How about 'Semper Fi' instead??

Kind of has that SI-appropriate theme to it too, KWIM???

HFSSC posted 9/25/2013 10:46 AM

If you are going to say it, it's pronounced "Ooo-rah", with no "H" sound at the beginning.

lieshurt posted 9/25/2013 10:57 AM

A cultural caveat is: Do not Ooh-Rah anybody if you are not a Marine....Exceptions: 1) Navy Medical Personnel who have served with the Marines as Marines (i.e., wore Marine Green vs Navy Blue uniforms). 2) Navy and Marine Pilots (most from both groups go through officer candidate training with Marine Drill Instructors). 3) Any fellow service member, when used to acknowledge the superb achievement of a Marine.

This is what I found online.

Marine Corps vet here.

I agree with TR. I would use "Semper Fi" which means Always Faithful

Otherwise its said Oo-rah

ETA: TBH, having a civilian or anyone other than another marine say Oo-rah can be "annoying" sometimes. Either way, I'm sure the other Marines will appreciate the gesture. Just be prepared to have it shouted back at you. LOUDLY

Congratulations to you and your DD and your future SIL.

End T/J

They respond better to shouting "All Hands On Deck" very loudly.

Congrats on your DD getting married!

sportsfan posted 9/25/2013 11:30 AM

Thanks Moo! He's a great kid. Typical Marine in that he's mature, focused and fun.

They'll be moving to SoCal within a week after the wedding ... we'll miss DD desperately.

sportsfan posted 9/25/2013 11:32 AM

Tred - if I do will it really mean "all hands around my neck"?

Bigger posted 9/25/2013 11:43 AM

You could warn him that Marine or not if he doesn‘t treat your princess like she was his queen he’ll be shouting “Oo-rah” in a soprano voice…

Congratulations on your daughter!

sportsfan posted 9/25/2013 12:02 PM

Haha, Bigger! He's really great with her so I suspect his voice will remain as it is.

TrulyReconciled posted 9/25/2013 12:06 PM

Well, shit the Marines agree with me ... I can go home early

Good luck to them sportsfan!

It's really about the spirit of the occasion so don't think too much into this. The camaraderie and being together with their fellow marines is whats most important....that and alcohol (jk, sort of)

T/J: I always learn so much on SI!

Can I suggest a small wedding gift, for your dd. A book called Chicken Soup for the Military Wives Soul. Its a good read, where she will get a laugh, learn some things about being a Marine wife and figuring out she is not alone in it. Congratulations to all of you

sportsfan posted 9/26/2013 09:05 AM

Great idea, jjsr ... i'll see if I can find it today - thanks!!!
