...that it wanted to talk to SI folks to get their expert opinions. He is my first experiment with modelling paste. Up to now, I have made texture with impasto (thick) paint. Birdie is 8" x 8" acrylic over modelling paste on paper. Although the photo makes the painting darker than it really is, I still think I have to tone down the background so birdie stands out better. What do you wise SI people think?

(This is just a practice piece. The photo also makes the gold on the top feathers look funny.)

DS, my home life is a kindergarten! I play with paints and modelling paste and silly stuff and before you know it, three hours have flown by. It's the BEST therapy--though probably not the cheapest!

Do you think I should outline his eye? I have a problem knowing when to stop and leave something alone!

Personally, I would leave his eyes alone...I think if you do too much it will take away or be distracting from the beauty of it

That was my thought, too. I think it would look too stark. My grandchildren will probably end up with this piece. They often try to claim stuff!

I like that the bird doesn't pop out too much. Gives the painting a softer feel

Thank you all for your input.

Lucky2, maybe it's a shy bird seeking camouflage?
