She JUST told us this and she has to walk the field at halftime NEXT Friday!!!

What are WE supposed to do?? I don't even know how she should be dressed!! (Ack! Stressing, stressing!)

We have a couple of unique issues with her. See, I was always treated like a doll, so I refused to do that to her. Before the age of one, I knew about pantyhose. I took ballet. Before I was twelve, I learned how to walk with a book balanced on my head (practice for runway modeling). Hair, makeup, all of that crap, I knew plenty about. She knows nothing about this stuff.

PLUS, she's a redhead. It's a soft red. Still, I don't even know what kind of mascara redheads use.

ETA: HELLLLLLP!!!!!

Speaking as someone who was raised by a mom who was a prom queen, had a sister who was the belle of the ball, and myself having no fashion sense or dates I feel your frustration!

I would go with a simple dress (greens and purples are very lovely for redheads, yellows and oranges not too much) and go light on the make up. I never use mascara and have short lashes but use neutral lip glosses that add a little bump of color. She doesn't have to be made up to the point where she is uncomfortable either.

Get help IRL!

Go to a makeup counter in a high end store and get her make up done prior to the event.

Look online for past photos of homecoming events in your area to see what is the standard, you don't want to send her down in a ball gown if it's short party dress are in.

What the PP said! Go to a make up counter and get a make up session done. All you need to do is buy a product, even just an eye pencil and you'll give them the sale they are wanting. Lots of us fashion or make up skills void girls did it in high school for prom.

I just saw a pic of the VMA awards with a redhead in a soft lavender gown. She looked stunning in it and was on the best dressed list. That or green might work...and definately go with a brown mascara. Much less harsh for softer coloring. Good luck! It will be a great bonding moment...

Welcome14 I'm glad you backed up my greens and purples for redheads. I am horrible at fashion advice. I feel like I don't fit in here since I only posted last year yet have lurked when I had my own infidelity experience (as a betrayed) many years ago.

Yes to the green or purple dress. Go light with the makeup and use a sheer gloss (since she's 14, light makeup/gloss will not make her look overdone). As far as mascara, I'm a ginger and I use black or brown mascara.

How exciting for her

If they do crowns, make sure the hair do is crown compatible, shoes that won't sink in the field (unless of course they compensate for this, each school is different, and we always did homecoming in the gym), a pretty shawl or wrap if it is cold??

Did Homecoming 3 times. Simple was always best imo.

It really should be more about the experience than the "look" imo.

Hope you survive this ((((thoughtiknewya))))

Some schools wear suits (skirt, jacket). Not dresses. There's a teacher in charge of this. Call the school and ask for a run down. Have fun!

I'm not the winner, I'm the prize.

This is probably a stupid question, but do girls still wear pantyhose with dresses??

Stop thinking you're so ignorant OP. None of your questions are stupid. I've always gauged tights/pantyhose when it comes to weather. Short dresses mean wear cover. Otherwise it's not always needed. I never wore anything than a slip and panties with long dresses. Short ones? If it was cold yes.

At my DD's school the girls wear suits to walk on the field. I recommend a neutral subdued lip color instead of gloss. Shiny lip gloss doesn't photograph well. If there is a sephora near you they do a good job on makeup.
