No one changes unless they want to. Not if you beg them. Not if you shame them. Not if you use reason, emotion, or tough love. There is only one thing that makes someone change: their own realization that they need to.

I have a crazy squirrel that comes on my deck.
It scratches at the patio door. It tries to eat the rug in front of the door. I felt sorry for it so I put some old roasted shelled peanuts I was going to throw out on the table outside.
That was a week ago. The squirrel still comes and tries to eat the rug, but the peanuts are untouched. Nothing has come to eat those.I wonder about that.

I was reading in my bedroom Saturday when a flash of tail caught my eye. When I looked out to the terrace, this plump squirrel, his mouth crammed with peanuts in the shell, was happily digging up my herbs so he could bury his hoard. I opened the door and disabused him of that idea. I'm sure he waits till I go to work, then buries to his heart's content, squeaking, "Nananananana!"
