"Throwing shade"

I'm probably waaaaay late on this, but I thought it was funny.

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 10/23/2013 21:35 PM

Just to clarify, it means to put negativity on someone. If you do that, you're "throwing shade" on them.

I feel so old.

Neither have I, NG.

"Popping Smoke" is to retreat under cover of a smokescreen.

I picked up "throwing shade" from a colleague in Alabama about 8 years ago. I had never heard it before then, so I assumed it was a Southern thing?

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 10/24/2013 09:34 AM

I'm a Southern girl and I had never heard throwing shade before.

TR, thanks for the clarification on the popping smoke. Now I see why jjct thought it was the same as throwing shade.

"Throwing shade" is used a lot in the gay community

welcome14 posted 10/24/2013 13:51 PM

Yeah, popping smoke is retreating under cover of smoke grenade, but also used to cover leaving- as in "I have to be there in ten minutes, so I'm popping smoke..." Kinda like "Ruck Up!"
