	Just to clarify, it means to put negativity on someone.  If you do that, you're "throwing shade" on them.

	I picked up "throwing shade" from a colleague in Alabama  about 8 years ago. I had never heard it before then, so I assumed it was a Southern thing?

	I'm a Southern girl and I had never heard throwing shade before.

	Yeah, popping smoke is retreating under cover of smoke grenade, but also used to cover leaving- as in "I have to be there in ten minutes, so I'm popping smoke..."  Kinda like "Ruck Up!"
