Hello All,

The baby is one month old. His colic is getting better, but he's very difficult to settle down to sleep and sleeps very lightly. We're at the bonding stage, I think and he only wants to sleep with mom.

One of his habits that I didn't have with DD is that he cries sharply in his sleep. Any thoughts? Is it the colic? It's a terrible noise that has me sit bolt upright out of sleep.

Thanks.

Could it be reflux?

sounds like colic/reflux stuff.

If it's something that wakes him up, it's a problem, if it's just a sharp cry and done it could be nothing other than a gas pain. As a mom of a the "Worlds Worst Newborn Ever In the HIstory of Mankind" I can honestly say that if he is stillhaving lots of colic issues to push to switch fomulas. I waited way longer than I should have on the recommendation of my pediatrician, and Laleche person. DUMB. I finally switched him, and he became the happiest easiest baby ever, in less than 24 hours.

Maybe check with his dr? DD was on 4 different formulas till we found one that didn't make her tummy hurt and her cry. Alimentum was $$$, but totally worth it.

Try playing him Otis readings sitting on the dock of the bay. I have it on loop on a baby MP3 player for mine, he loves it, so did my others.

Oh yes, if you are breast feeding try cutting out dairy . If you are formula feeding try a sensitive formula. good luck!

Mine could only have premature formula without iron. For he it was all about the food and gas.

Agree with others on switching up formula if you aren't breastfeeding. It took a couple tries with my youngest, but once we put her on soy formula, no more colic. Seriously, it seemed miraculous to me after nearly 2 months of miserable baby. We had a great pediatrician.

A couple of different thoughts. what about white noise? When my kids were babies, the ones that couldn't sleep we used a tape recording of a vacuum cleaner. Now 1 of my kids have their own little and they use their phone to play "white noise" (downloaded an app). I use it at my house when I have the baby too.

The other thought is, sleep with the baby. I had 4 kids. First 3 they slept in their cribs, cried, had to get up to feed (nursed all of them) etc. I felt like I was a walking zombie. Fourth one, I needed sleep, I had teenagers on dates (I had to be awake when they got home to confirm all was ok) had to get the others to school (high school, jr hi, and elementary). The only way I got any sleep was just sleeping with the 4th baby. And you know what, if I had to do it all over again I would sleep with them all. I got more sleep, he slept better and everyone was happier!

Good luck. While those days are decades behind me, I STILL remember how tired I was.

And FYI, my third had major reflux and slept 6-10 hours straight by the time she was a month old. Dr suggested to raise the mattress slanted with her head slightly higher. But she never really woke up due to the reflux.
