I have a few questions for some of those who have been through this.

Our DD is almost 2 but very small for her age. She slept in a crib for a few months and then she did her car seat. Then we transitioned to her swing to sleep at night. I've been wanting to put her in her own room at night but the problem is is that we have no crib or bed for her. We had planned on getting her a crib after she was born but with all her issues of sleeping in bassinet and play yard, we just skipped the crib.

Well now comes the hard part. I've been looking at convertible cribs. Where I can transition from crib to toddler to school age to adult. I have no clue on what to do. I don't want to do a toddler bed because she has hardwood floors in her room and if she falls, she'll be hurt. Is she too big for a crib if she is the size of a 9 month old but has the capability of being an excellent climber?

Any help offered would be so greatly appreciated!!

Are you afraid of her falling in general or falling when she is sleeping? When my kids were toddler we had rails that tucked under the mattress that did great at keeping the kids from rolling off in their sleep.

I'm afraid of both. She tends to try to get up in her sleep and move around. She also likes to get up and run around from the time she wakes until I get her down for the night.

Did that bed rail have a pretty good height on it? By that I mean if she were to sit up, would she have to stand up to get over it? Also, does it run the length of the bed.

Sorry so many questions to you. She has her daddy's sense of balance and she falls all the time. And by all the time, I literally mean she falls 20 times a day. So, I'm a nervous mama here lol.

There seems to be several options. You might want to do an internet search on bed rails

I know a lot of parents who just did a mattress on the floor, with or without the rails Moo suggested. 4 inches isn't too far to roll. Then when she gets used to the mattress you can put it on a frame.

I had bought a plastic toddler bed for about $35. It was low to the ground. Maybe put a fluffy area rug down, too?

The siderail Moo posted worked great! We bought 2. They ran about 4 feet long. She had to scoot down to the bottom portion of the bed to hop out.

My 3 year old started sleeping in a twin bed a couple months back. She moves around in her sleep a lot too. She feel out of bed the first couple of nights and her crying from the shock of waking up from hitting the floor was enough for me to search out bed rails like moo posted about. I got 2 rails for each side of the bed. They connect underneath the mattress to each other so she can't push them out in her sleep. They are about 3-4 feet long and 1 foot tall. My dd doesn't fall out when sitting up either.

They are a bit expensive so you might want to look on craigslist or eBay for them.

Edited to correct spelling.

Thank you everyone for responding!

I am currently doing the whole toddler mattress on the floor move but I'm having troubles with that. She wants to get up and move around (I'm sleeping on the floor next to her) and she also isn't sleeping well. She moves around a lot in her sleep as if she flailing. It's hard to explain but it seems like she just starts whimpering and rubbing all her limbs in different directions. I'm not sure why she does that. Maybe she misses having a side to her bed? She was use to being "cradled" in her sleep due to sleeping in carseat and swing. Maybe she misses that??

Jo-is it one of this Dora or Spongebob beds that are around $35 or so? If so, I saw those! Was it really low? Our DD is only about 28 inches so she is still a little munchkin.

I'll also get a flat, fluffy pillow for under her bed. Great idea!!!

When my kids were small they both needed to be swaddle to sleep because they moved their limbs a lot and it would wake them up. After they got past the age of swaddling (almost a year old) it took a while for them to sleep deeply because they would search for the confinement. Maybe putting pillows on each side of her might help.

I have found with my kids it helps to have a bedtime routine that is predictable... It helps get their brains and bodies ready for sleep. We take baths and then get in bed for a couple of books. Then I sit or lay with them for a couple of minutes. The transition from crib to bed is a little rough because they finally have freedom and they want to run around.

Also I suffer from restless leg syndrome (sleep disorder that causes lots of movement during sleep). I can say from experience that moving during my sleep does wake my brain up enough where I don't feel fully rested the next day. Exercise, warm baths, and stretching helps.

My DD would move all over her crib, toddler bed, and now regular bed. I was afraid she would fall out, but she was fine.

I moved both of my kids out of the crib when they figured out how to monkey out of them.

The first one, my less graceful child, I put his mattress on the floor for about a 2 weeks, then went ahead and put it in the frame up off the floor. I did use one of the rails, and had it up against the wall on the other side, he never fell out. He was 2 years and 3 months old when we made the transition.

His little sister was younger, and was quite the monkey, climbing, jumping whatever. She was also a crazy sleeper, she fell out of bed occasionally, sometimes she would wake up, and get back in, sometimes not, and just sleep on the floor for a while.

Remeber they are made out of rubber for the most part until they hit about 10 years old.

Good luck.

Thank you all so much! So many great ideas I don't know where to start.

Courageous-I will try the pillows to see if that helps. She is restless and just moves so much. When she is more confined (like being cradled) she doesn't stir at all.

Jo-that bed is really cute! Our Walmart is so tiny that they don't have anything like that. They have these tiny character beds that I'm not thrilled over.

Tush-she is testing the boundaries of the rubber theory. She constantly falls into objects head first. My heart can't take it anymore.
