Please tell me which part of the country this nightmare was found. I have my evacuation plans ready if you should name my current location.

metamorphisis posted 10/28/2013 17:27 PM

Dear mother of pete.. that is absolutely horrifying. Where the hell do you people live and WHY???!!!!

Tred posted 10/28/2013 17:32 PM

This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas)and northern half of Mexico.

Lyonesse posted 10/28/2013 17:37 PM

Thanks, Tred. I am not in Cali at the moment (whew). I may never go back.

In other news, I heard on NPR the other day that in the Dakotas rattlers are evolving to have no rattle. Still venomous, though. Yikes.

The friend who posted this is in LA. (ETA: City of Angels)

I saw an Eastern Diamondback (not in captivity) a couple of years back. It was a BIG snake, but NOWHERE NEAR this one! The head on that thing is huge!!

Are you pulling my leg?? Did you know that is where I live?!? That doesn't look like LA to me!

ETA: Out of curiousity, how did it become an ex-snake? Did your friend hit it with his truck?

That picture has been making the rounds for quite some time. See story about it (and other alleged giant snake pics/stories) here -

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 10/28/2013 18:05 PM

I'm not saying it isn't a fake. It could be.

I know I've seen a snake so huge it took a row of men to hold it up- on my grandfather's farm when I was a kid and I've more recently personally seen snakes a LOT larger than they were supposed to be, according to the books.

Thank you, NIK.

I may just move to Ireland anyway. There have been far too many snake/sbake postings on SI lately for my liking.

I could see a rattler (Eastern or Western diamondback) getting that big. All it takes is good eatin'...

Williesmom posted 10/28/2013 20:28 PM

Alaska. No snakes in Alaska.

I'll take my chances with cold weather and bears.

Unagie posted 10/28/2013 20:30 PM

oh no oh no oh no....i might be moving to new mexico soon, like the threat of scorpions climbing into my shoes wasn't bad enough right!?
