Is this possible? I seem to end up with IBS symptoms whenever I eat something with cinnamon in it...

Snickerdoodles for instance...

SerJR posted 10/30/2013 18:09 PM

You can easily test. Swallow one tablespoon of pure cinnamon and tell us how it works out for ya

ThoughtIKnewYa posted 10/30/2013 18:10 PM

ACK!!! Did it happen when you ate my cinnamon rolls that time??

jrc1963 posted 10/30/2013 18:15 PM

Hey Ser... you've been a lot more active these days... and your suggestions are very *ahem* helpful... NOT!!!

TIKY - No, I don't recall that happening with your cinnamon rolls... it seems to happen with snickerdoodles for the most part... but I don't eat a whole lot of other cinnamon-y type things.

sadcat posted 10/30/2013 18:31 PM

What about things made with butter?

SerJR posted 10/30/2013 18:36 PM

I agree sadcat... She should try a tablespoon of that too.

Yes you can develop an allergy to cinnamon. It is not unheard of, but is not a common allergy.
I would try to eat something with just a sprinkle of it, like a waffle or toast, to see if that gets you. If not then probably something else in the doodles.

simplydevastated posted 10/31/2013 08:24 AM

Or you could get allergy tested because it may not be the cinnamon if you've had it other things and it didn't affect you.

Good Luck.

Many things with cinnamon in them also contain wheat or gluten. Is there a chance you're sensitive to either one and the addition of cinnamon makes it flare more?

jrc1963 posted 11/1/2013 14:28 PM

I know wheat and gluten don't cause me problems. I usually eat a sandwich at lunch made on whole wheat bread and I don't suffer like I do after eating the cookie.

WHEW!! That's a relief!! I don't ever want to cause intestinal distress!! No, NO!!

Do the Snickerdoodles always come from the same place??

No... actually it was multiple sources, including homemade. Weird, huh?

And it's always snickerdoodles... never any other cookie.

Mama_of_3_Kids posted 11/1/2013 20:19 PM

Maybe the AMOUNT of an ingredient is causing it. My guess would be the amount of butter (or oil) used. I know excessive oils cause IBS symptoms for me.

(((tummy))) I hope you feel better soon!

jrc1963 posted 11/1/2013 20:23 PM

Mama... As long as I don't eat Snickerdoodles my tummy is fine.

Also, it's a short lived episode. The last one was a couple of hours... that's the longest it's ever been.

million pieces posted 11/1/2013 20:44 PM

Make a batch of snickerdoddles without cinnamon and eat.

Hearthache again posted 11/2/2013 01:21 AM

A lot of refined carbs will set my IBS off sometimes. Cinnamon does not bother me, but everyone's IBS is different.

I have noticed that stuff that causes heartburn in me can set my IBS off. Oatmeal is a known trigger for me. Could it be stress? Even the stress of knowing that you had a flare up last time you ate it could cause you to flare up. The bowels are the most sensitive organ when it comes to stress.

When I am super stressed drinking water can cause me to not feel well and in the bathroom most of the day. IBS plan sucks.

SerJR posted 11/2/2013 07:41 AM

Lol... from snickerdoodles to snickerdookies in an hour flat... lol...
I'm sorry I'm not helping
