Domesticated - The Play

Having ditched the TV years ago, I am not privy to the trials and tribulations of programs highlighting infidelity such as House of Cards or The Good Wife. However, I do still read the paper and this week’s Sunday’s NY Times Art & Leisure section article, ‘Call It the Theater of Contrition’ caught my eye. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/27/theater/bruce-norriss-domesticated-takes-on-politics-and-monogamy.html?_r=0

Reading through, it seems the play, ‘Domesticated’ is supposed to send a message that society may not be looking at the real root of infidelity, that men are animals? That it’s their nature to screw and as ‘domesticated’ animals, they suffer in silence, biting back this truth while society shames them, if they are caught doing something that's instinctive?

Did anyone else read this? The play is at the Lincoln Center, not off Broadway.

And the WW's? One a dog? The other a pussy? Sorry. STBX actually told our accountant he's a dog. I had to walk out.

We're supposed to be humans...?

Know nothing of the play.

If this is true, that they are animals, men shouldn't get married. End of story. I don't give a shit if society tells you that you should - "man" up and stay single. Or get divorced before you follow your instincts.

Also, there are a lot of instincts we've tempered over the years much to our benefit as the human species.

Funny I didn't see anything in the article about WWs.....I could have missed it but the play is a story about men in politics behaving badly.

Supposedly it portrays men as animals trained to ignore their instincts. I find the concept repulsive and an insult to men......

RockyMtn - I agree. Nobody makes a man get married or makes them stay married.

This article just struck me as a symptom of what's wrong today.....creating excuses for doing what we know is wrong.

I haven't seen the play so I don't know all the details, just what I read.

If men are animals that are suppose to screw at will and "spread their seed". Does that mean that women are suppose to be incubators for their spawn? Are we to spread our legs to any man that has a need and then raise that "spawn" alone as he goes on to his next conquest, all in the name of "populating the Earth"? Seriously?

It's bullshit; plain and simple. They are human beings with an ability to control their actions and reactions. they are not mindless, drooling animals waiting for the next kill or sperm injection.

By this train of thought, it should be perfectly acceptable for a man to rape a woman, because he is simply fulfilling his animalistic need.

No, NO, NO!

I've just started to get really annoyed at this 'spread my seed' idea.

I see a baby, and I want to stop what I'm doing and help nurture the kid. That takes me away from doing fun things, like riding my bike, reading, getting it on with the partner of my choice, etc.

Sex I want - but I want sex with positive consequences (like more and better sex), not negative ones (like children).

Of course, there came a time in my life when I viewed a child as a positive consequence - but the child made me want to stay closer than ever to his mom. I just don't see and desirability in 'spreading my seed'.

I can't imagine I'm the only man who thinks this way.

Absolute horse shit. Hogwash. Pig shit. Bull shit.

Quite frankly as a man I am insulted by this view. We are NOT animals. We have higher brain function (maybe some more than others). We have morals.

IMO men are no worse than women as far as cheating goes. This view is sexist and it is just plain WRONG.

Sooo, all of those faithful men, hmmmm must really be sick to not follow their "animal instinct".
Sheesh, can we get any more horse droppings from these idiots!
Please.

It is disturbing to me that someone wrote a play with this message (again, I haven't seen it, just read the review) but more so that it would play at the Lincoln Center.

In the article, the playwright is quoted: "Too often we come away from these scandals with simplistic conclusions like men are bad, women are unlikeable"............"We demonize ourselves rather than asking if there's something species-related going on that we're really not interested in talking about."
