Just don't get one from Toys R Us. We made that mistake. The kids were a little younger and we didn't want to spend $100's on one if they didn't like it. So Toys R Us had one (Eduscience is the name, if memory serves) and it wouldn't detect a coin under a leaf. It had to be on top of the ground which defeats the purpose.

Good luck

Yeah, I would like to keep it 150 or less, which limits me, but...I need to see that he really uses it before I invest big bucks because it looks like these can get complicated and pricey.

Bounty Hunter seems mid-range...but I have honestly never used one or even seen one in use.

I was wondering what a kid would want with one, but oh, it's THAT kind, not the one we use to wand examinees at the testing centre....

You can rent them from a hardware store.

Do that, let him take a spin with it and if it turns into a real hobby, you're set.

I would purchase one from Ebay or Craigslist. I'm sure there are a lot of "This-Was-Fun-For-1-Month" gift receivers out there.

If it eventually loses it's appeal (and it will, most likely) just resell it.

JMHO.

I got my daughter one for Xmas about two years ago.

about $50 at BJ's.

It's not really high end, but the kids do like to bring it to the beach....they find stuff like nickels or beer/soda bottle tops....the little kids really seem to enjoy it.

what did I ever do to deserve this?
