I had a GI bug all last weekend and the first part of this week. Now, I have canker sores all over my mouth. I've never had this before and it's seriously painful. Any ideas on how to make this better? It's bad enough that I'm almost in tears

Any way you could get a doc to call in magic mouthwash for you? We usually have it compounded with viscous lidocaine, Benadryl and something like nystatin.

If you can't get that, I'd get orajel and dilute it, then swish it around.

I'm sorry. I know that's miserable.

I seriously don't know how I manage to break through the pain of this, but I put salt directly on the wound if I happen to get a canker. I stand there over the sink pretending I'm some gladiator, while tears pour down my face. Doing this is the only thing that works for me. That stuff you buy at the pharmacy? Doesn't work for me. Swishing salt water in my mouth? Not concentrated enough. I take a pinch of salt and literally grind it in. Sounds fun, eh?

Oh, and if I don't do it twice in one day, the bloody thing won't start healing.

Best of luck!

I've tried Listerine, but it's not helping. I thought about the Magic Mouthwash, but didn't know if there was anything I could do without a script. The practice I go to won't call in anything, without seeing the patient, unfortunately.

Chloraseptic, maybe?

Canker Spanker.

My poor H has dealt with cold sores and canker sores his whole life. I got desperate and ordered these pills after reading some really, really good independent reviews. They work wonders. I don't know if linking to the site is allowed, but it's easily found through Google.

Go in to the dr and get a Rx for Valtrex... It works for Cold Sores/Canker Sores... Believe me, I know.

Baking soda and peroxide mouth rinse. Google it and make your own. Works for me. Good luck!

I have suffered from canker sores my entire life! My DD does too. The one thing that always helps heal it the fastest....warm salt water rinses 3 or 4 times a day. Just before bedtime is a must!

Also, milk of magnesia as helped me in decades past.

Thank you, everyone

Try some folic acid, 2 mg.
I've suffered from canker sores for several years and was recently on a medication that also caused them. I was prescribed folic acid to take along with the medication to help with the side effects and it really did the trick. I still got the mouth sores with 1 mg of folic acid but when I upped the dosage to 2 mg the sores stopped.

You can also make your own version of magic mouthwash, I used to do it when the sores were really bad. I don't remember the exact measurements but the pharmacist should be able to tell you. I know it was milk of magnesia, liquid benadryl and orajel. I used to get an empty medicine bottle from the pharmacist.

Good luck! I know those boogers hurt like a mother effer!

Mama - If your mouth has those horrific sores, and you have had a GI bug all week, wouldn't you be concerned that perhaps those same sores are along the entire GI tract?

Now I know about mouth sores I have had them chronically, and Magic Wash works well for easing the pain, but I didn't find it helpful for healing up the sores.

If you have been on antibiotics you may be dealing with a Thrush like bug, and really need an antifungal. If not then try doing a yogurt mixed with some anbasol, swish and spit. I found this to be the most soothing.

Salt water swishes tend to kill the fresh granulation tissues and make those bright pink sores have a white/grayish base, so you basically start over with the healing process when this happens. That white base is dead tissue.

You really may want to consider seeing the Dr though given you have been sick, unless that part is all better now.

Unfortunetly I have had canker and cold sores my whole life. My family doctor has been nice enough to give me Acyclovir when I get an outbreak (yes, its the same stuff for the genital herpes) but omg does it work.

When I get a breakout around my mouth though its horrible without it. it will go up into my nose and into my mouth. If i catch it right when i feel the tingle though, it barely breaks out.

Its worth asking about.

How are you feeling today, Mama?

I've been getting them my whole life too... since I was a little kid. They were awful back then...

The Acyclovir - brand name Valtrex - really is a life saver. I take it as soon as the tingle starts and I almost don't even get an outbreak.

Mine usually comes up in that little divot on the upper lip under your nose.

(((Mama))) How are you feeling?

Mama_of_3_Kids posted 12/16/2013 18:40 PM

tush, I thought the same thing about it possibly being all GI related. My stomach is still touchy, when I eat certain things. If I'm not better by Wednesday, I'm calling the Dr.

Thanks, again, everyone.
