Excuse me while I throw a tantrum but W.T.H!?!?!?!?
Every single stinking pair of pants my son gets, he blows the knees out. Every. Pair.
I don't know how he does it.
He doesn't run thru fields with barbed wire.
He doesn't have a dog with long toenails that jumps up on him.
He doesn't run down gravel roads.
He doesn't play with scissors or knives.
He isn't involved in sports. He doesn't slide into home plate in the backyard.
How in the world does every single pair of pants he owns have holes in the knees!?!?
Is this a boy thing or is mine just special?
Is it considered cruel and unusual punishment to force him to wear knee guards (kinda like the construction ones) anytime he wears pants?
ARGH!

My darling boy was the same way!
He's gotten better as he's gotten older, but the new problem is that his jeans are now 2in too short about a week after we buy them.
The kid is over 6ft tall and still has a bit of growing!

It's a boy thing (I have 3 of them, 4 if you count my husband). Yes, even my husband - who (like me) is a university professor - has knee holes in EVERY. SINGLE. PAIR. of jeans.
Every pair of mine are fine, of course, they show very little wear, and I've had most of them for at least 5 or 6 years.
One frontal assault you could try is putting thick knee patches on the jeans before he wears them (you can put them on the inside if he doesn't want them to show). Those might help to keep the knees intact until he outgrows them.
Good Luck!!

Come on Aubrie - 10 years ago you paid extra for jeans with the knees blown out!
It's not just him. Every one of my boys tear up their jeans and the knees are the first to go.

Does he play on the carpet with cars/trains/legos what have you???
All that scooting around on his knees with the toys on the carpet can blow out the knees.
DS is 12 and never once blew out the knees of his jeans... of course, being a Floridian I guess he doesn't wear jeans that often.
But, when he does, the knees stay intact until he outgrows the pants.

It isn't just him, my boys either have holes in the knees of all their pants, or they outgrow them within a couple weeks of being bought and they stay intact.
I always just assumed it was because they spent so much time crawling and falling. Crawling while pushing Hot Wheels, army crawling into their fort behind the sofa, crawling around the side of the bed to pop up and scare me in the morning, crawling after the rabbit in the front yard, trying not to make a sound...always crawling.

It was the same with my son. I used to iron patches inside on the knees. It helped make them last a bit longer.

Include my son in that same club.

OMG, it is SO frustrating. I (gloriously) hit a sale like 3 months ago and bought 6 pairs of jeans for church/going out type days. Yeah. Half have holes already.
And he just went thru a growth spurt prior to my purchase. He's a little guy so I don't anticipate another growth spurt for a while.
*sigh*

Have you tried a different brand? My son did better with some brands over others.
Aubrie (original poster member #33886) posted at 2:54 PM on Wednesday, December 18th, 2013
Yeah, it doesn't matter the brand. I shop everywhere and get what's on sale. So he's been in literally every brand out there.
Guess I'll have to break down and do the patch thing for his play jeans at least.

I had this issue with my son, and couldn't figure out how he kept blowing out the knees. UNTIL......I went to school one day to drop off something of help in a class or some such, and saw them in gym class, and they were playing somekind of game that involved those rolly creeper things, and a ball and dodging the balls, and low and behold I had my answer.
All the boys that were dodging were running and sliding on their knees.
They loved doing it, they could slide far and fast, and if I was a 6-12 year old boy, I would do it too.
I threatened to sew flower patches, and so forth on his knees if he continued to ruin his pants. I also had him wear a specific pairs with the knees already ripped out on the days that they had gym, and inside recess.
The good news is they do outgrow this, and their jeans......
Then you have issues like finding 29 x 34's. Which is damn near impossible.....

Yep, DS10 has rips in the knees of most of his jeans. I designate two pairs as going out jeans. They get too short for him so fast I'm constantly giving away jeans and school pants (khakis). I used to buy them a size ahead in bulk from The Children's Place when they had a good sale. Those lasted fairly well.

When AJ was young, Sears carried a brand called "Toughskins" which had reinforced knees.
Back then, we joined their Kid's Club and got deals on them but the best thing is they guaranteed the knees would last the time they fit.
You may want to check into those. As to the guarantee, I'm not sure if it's still around - keep in mind, my "boy" is 30 now.

I always wondered the same thing about DS8...then I really looked at how he spent his time. He is constantly sliding around on the carpet at home, doing tricks, playing with toys, etc.
I've just given up. I save all of DS8's clothes for DS3, but I have resigned myself to having to buy all new jeans as DS3 grows.

I used to blow mine out all the time as a youngster. We didn't have much growing up and parents couldn't replace them all the time, so mom bought those iron on knee patches. I hated it so much, I stopped being so rough on my jeans.

I had totally forgotten about what a problem this was since my boy is 28. It drove me crazy! That and grass stains. I used to wonder if I could scotch guard the knees so the grass stains would come out easier. Never actually tried it. Nowadays, I worry more about my 20 year old daughter who wears ripped jeans too - only those rips are a little more strategically placed and worrisome in a whole other way.
