I'm sure some of you have read it..
I got the series for Christmas, haven't started it yet.

Thoughts? Good, bad? It's the first series I know NOTHING about that I'm about to read.

I haven't watched the show, either so I'm really going in blind.

The first four books are fantastic, then (in my opinion) the author gets a little long-winded and adds in a lot of extra characters that make it more difficult to keep the threads of the story.

Don't get me wrong- it is a GREAT series.
However, George R. R. Martin is a slow writer (perfectionist), so it takes a long while for the next book to come out.

Thank you!

Still working my through 5. I found books 2 and 4 to be a bit of a chore but for the most part I'm enjoying the series.

JanaGreen posted 12/31/2013 14:57 PM

I agree with Gaby except that I found the fourth book to be pretty tedious too (although still good).

I'm loving it so far. I'm totally grossed out by the incest, though I'm enjoying the intrigue.

SurprisinglyOkay posted 1/6/2014 12:33 PM

I love it!
I had a long break between 4 and 5, which I'm reading now.
Even though I read the wiki pages for reminders, I am so lost when certain things and characters come up....

I read them all when the last one, Dance of Dragons came out. Both H and I spent many months reading them. Sometimes it dragged a little, but he develops the characters so well that I could almost see them. I really enjoyed the series and look forward to Martin getting another one out.

When it came out on video we bought the first season and I think they did a pretty good job picking most of the people to fit the parts.

I think reading it is still better than watching it though.

Love them, just started book 5 this week and I am addicted to the show. I have a love/hate thing with the author as I have come to know this series better.

I just got home from the library with my shiny copy of Book 4. I can't wait

cannibal posted 1/16/2014 03:39 AM

I absolutely love the show!!!

I can't wait until the new season starts!!!

I haven't read the books. I've heard there are a few differences, but like all novels the books tell it better than the tv ever could.

Coachdig10 posted 1/17/2014 19:47 PM

This is the best series of books I have read. Liked if even more than the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I am currently reading Name of the WInd and find it good as well.

I tried so hard to get into these books and I just couldn't. I don't know why, but I couldn't get "lost" into it like I like

Ascendant posted 1/20/2014 09:25 AM

This is probably my favorite book series ever. Love 'em.

flayed posted 2/3/2014 15:29 PM

I think this is probably my favorite series of books ever. For me there weren't any slow books. I am dying for the next one to come out. That is my only complaint....too long to wait in between books.

Coachdig10- where did you get Name of the Wind?

flayed posted 2/3/2014 16:18 PM

Oops. I got mixed up about the author for "Name of the Wind".

JanaGreen posted 2/3/2014 16:35 PM

For those who've read the books & watched the show, did you love both? I held off watching until I finished the books and I haven't started yet.

flayed posted 2/3/2014 16:48 PM

I love both the books and the HBO series. Tyrion most of all
Be aware that there will be differences....more and more as the series progresses.

I love both! I am more of a reader so I would read the books first. I read the books a while ago and read them so fast that as I watch I'm trying to remember what actually happened in the books, and having trouble.

I may need to read them again at some point.

Crescita posted 2/4/2014 12:19 PM

I love both the TV series and the books. Maybe the show more, but they are further behind so we'll see how that goes.

I started with the show, and found the female characters more endearing, then on to the books and the male characters are more appealing. Except Tyrion, he is awesome in both.

I wouldn't worry about spoiling yourself one way or the other, they are different enough to be enjoyable in both forms.
