Once a New Yorker...

Three years ago we moved from NY to PA. Mostly to escape the taxes, and just for a fresh start. We bought a nice house in a rural area and it's been pretty nice here except it has never really felt like home.

LD's commute doubled when we moved and it's 80 miles each way. I was able to keep one of my NY jobs and get another local part-time job.

LD's sister was very sick last year and we've been feeling the distance from our family. Life's too short, we're learning.

We started talking about what it would be like to be back in NY and one day we just said, Hell, let's just do it!

So....we bought a townhouse about 6 miles from SIL and an hour away from my brother and his family (as opposed to 2.5 hours now). We'll be downsizing in order to not get killed by the taxes. But, we're happy!!! It's happening very quickly.

Always NYers in our hearts and now we'll be back home in about a month. I'm still processing all this, freaking out a little bit, but happy to be going 'home'.

Now, does anybody want to buy a beautiful home in rural PA?

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

I wondered why the wine glasses were "packed away" in the NYE thread in F & G!

Yep. I'd procrastinate until the last minute but LD is making me be productive. DD and I were drinking wine out of paper cups last week. I said, 'I'm sorry DD, dad packed away all the wine glasses.' She said, 'Mom, I'm in college, this is the only way we drink wine!'

ETA Thanks, jrc!

It really is a good house for entertaining. If we don't sell it we might have no choice. We'll just charge admission.

Both kids hated the new area. It's far from everything. DS is on his own now (permanently, God willing he'll keep his shit together and be able to sustain it).

DD is away at school and we moved right when she graduated HS so this never felt like home. She's thrilled because we'll be in a great spot so she can travel to see her boyfriend and the friends she's made in college. Also, when she gets a job after she graduates, this is a great commuter location.

They grew up close to the area we're moving back to so this just makes them happy. There's really no connection here for them.

Congrats and how exciting, adventurous and fun, an.

I thought this topic was about something else. I was going to agree and tell you that these Minnesotans really don't know what to make of this New Yawk transplant.

Congrats!! There really is no place like home. Are you in Manhattan? I spent a few months there some time ago - really liked it, but like you, it wasn't home so it never felt 'right'.

Mom, I'm in college, this is the only way we drink wine!

This may be the best thing I've read all year, and there's only 3 hours left for something to beat this!!!

I wondered the same thing and thought I must have missed something... so I went SI stalking on AN's *recent posts* and found this one.

You sound really happy! I can hear the excitement in your posts. But let us remember the geography lesson re: the regions of NY.

Happy for you!
