Here is an interesting article that shows mindfulness meditation may be useful in battles against anxiety, depression and pain, according to a fresh look at past research:

I have been doing mindful meditation for several years. I'm confident it's the main reason I no longer need anxiety medication.

Here is a quote from the article:

There was also about a 10 to 20 percent improvement in symptoms of depression among those who practiced mindfulness meditation, compared to the other group.

"This is similar to the effects that other studies have found for the use of antidepressants in similar populations," Goyal said.

As an old ICU nurse I can honestly say that if you can get a patient calm enough to follow instructions on meditation, and help them do it, they need less pain meds, and less sedation.

I too practice this esp when I feel an anxiety/panic attack coming on.

Meditation interests me, but I have no idea what "mindful" meditation is vs other forms (or even if there ARE other forms).

Can you tell us more about it?
Where might one get started in trying it?

Here is a brief YouTube video that has an introduction to mindful meditation:

I also recommend the book,
The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

There are other forms, but I have found mindful meditation to be the simplest to get started with. To find out more about mindful meditation and other forms of meditation, I recommend the book:

Susan Piver is ,IMO, another excellent meditation teacher who offers free instructional videos for beginners. She also wrote, "The wisdom of a broken heart", awesome book. Here is her link:

I've been working on mindfulness and meditation for the past couple of weeks. I'm only up to 10 minutes and not daily yet but I feel more relaxed each time.
