Emotions through songs

So I not only have a problem expressing my emotions but also feeling them. Music and lyrics are really powerful to me in the way that they elicit a wave of feeling and thought and unleash a plethora of emotions in me. So I am starting this thread to see what songs that have a strong emotional reaction to in you all. I will start with "After the storm" by Mumford and sons:

And after the storm,
I run and run as the rains come
And I look up, I look up,
on my knees and out of luck,
I look up.

Night has always pushed up day
You must know life to see decay
But I won't rot, I won't rot
Not this mind and not this heart,
I won't rot.

And I took you by the hand
And we stood tall,
And remembered our own land,
What we lived for.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And now I cling to what I knew
I saw exactly what was true
But oh no more.
That's why I hold,
That's why I hold with all I have.
That's why I hold.

And I won't die alone and be left there.
Well I guess I'll just go home,
Oh God knows where.
Because death is just so full and man so small.
Well I'm scared of what's behind and what's before.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

I'm with ya Sk! I'm a bit music obsessed, so finding my thoughts through song is really helpful. I had 8 hours alone in the car today and just had the iPod on shuffle and playing some favs.

If you aren't familiar with Josh Ritter, he's an indie SS who went through a divorce a couple of years ago. He released an album last year, The Beast in Its Tracks, which is just an amazing work of raw, honest material and heart wrenching lyrics. But there's a positivity to it as well. Example:

Joy To You Baby

I go to the parties
Throw my hands in the air
I drink what they pour me
The cups of who cares
Go up in the night sky
Up in the clouds
Fly over the houses
I'm looking down

Joy to the city
Joy to the streets
And joy to you baby, wherever you sleep
Tonight, tonight, tonight
Tonight, tonight, tonight

There's no ghosts in the graveyard
That's not where they live
They float in between us
'what is' and 'what if'
And cast our own shadows
Before our own eyes
You don't get them up here though
They don't come up high

Joy to the city
The parking lot lights
The lion of evening
With the rain in its eyes
Joy to the freeway
Joy to the cars
And joy to you baby, wherever you are
Tonight, tonight, tonight
Tonight, tonight, tonight

There's pain in whatever
We stumble upon
If I never had met you
You couldn't have gone
But then I couldn't have met you
We couldn't have been
I guess it all adds up
To joy to the end

Joy to the city
The heatwave and all
To the lion of evening
With the storm in its paw
Joy to the many
And joy to the few
And joy to you baby
Joy to me too
Tonight, tonight, tonight
Tonight, tonight, tonight
Tonight, tonight, tonight

I am still so early in the process that I'm struggling with the sadness, the grief, the guilt and shame. For me the chorus to Nora Jones' "Humble Me" is exactly how I feel.

Went out on a limb
Gone too far
Broken down at the side of the road
Stranded at the outskirts and sun's creepin' up
Baby's in the backseat
Still fast asleep
Dreamin' of better days
I don't want to call you but you're all i have to turn to

What do you say
When it's all gone away?
Baby i didn't mean to hurt you
Truth spoke in whispers will tear you apart
No matter how hard you resist it
It never rains when you want it to

You humble me Lord
Humble me Lord
I'm on my knees empty
You humble me Lord
You humble me Lord
Please, please, please forgive me

Baby Teresa got your eyes
I see you all the time
When she asks about her daddy
I never know what to say

Heard you kicked the bottle
And helped to build the church
You carry an honest wage
Is it true you have someone keeping you company?

What do you say
When its all gone away?
Baby i didn't meant to hurt you
Truth spoke in whispers will tear you apart
No matter how hard you resist it
It never rains when you want it to

You humble me Lord
Humble me Lord
I'm on me knees empty
You humble me Lord
You humble me Lord
Please, please, please forgive me

Egads. I will have to tell you a quick story... then never come back to this thread.

My affair partner was a very "deeply feeling" person. And she identified so much with popular music that touched her... and we'd share songs constantly. And I deeply adored the bond it built between us.

My wife, on the other hand, just doesn't experience life or music that way. And it is a gap between us.

Once the physical affair was over, and we were mostly out of each other's lives, I had to be VERY careful what songs I heard on the radio -- as certain songs (even certain bands) would cause me to start weeping uncontrollably. Took me years to be able to listen to a Goo Goo Dolls song again without feeling sick to my stomach.

Same with the songs on my iPod. For years, I could only listen to the little bit of country music I had on it... because it didn't make me weep because I knew she hated it! (Oh, and I think I had a little klezmer music, zydeco, and classical music. Those were "safe" too... after all, who listens to that except an freakishly eclectic music listener like me? )

So the very topic of "what songs have deep meaning for you" is itself a "trigger" for me. (If I'm getting the meaning of that term right.)

OK -- I just had to blurt that out there. I'm sorry if "talking about what I liked about my affair and affair partner" is not allowed/appreciated here. But I just felt I had to SAY it so I can LET GO of it: my affair both heightened and nearly ruined the pleasure of listening to "emotional music" for me.

If you need to respond to me about this post (yes, even if it is a scold or a complaint), use a PM or some other means, as I really really won't be able to come back to this thread.

"Hide in Your Shell" by Supertramp was comforting for me post D-Day2 for some reason. The unfortunate thing is now I think about those times when listening to it.

The unfortunate thing is now I think about those times when listening to it.

I think that you could use this actually to your benefit, use it to remember who you where, and where you came from, an the progress you have made. Use it as part of your motivation along your path to fixing yourself.

StillKicking - I've been listening to the music that comes up on my play list very hard looking for the positive inspiration you asked about. You are right, there are many Mumford and Sons songs that just nail the hope. But recently I was listening to a different station and heard Michael Jackson Featuring Akon singing Hold My Hand. I love it!!! I even played it for my BH:

[Michael]
Uuuuu....Oooohhh...Allright
[Akon]
Akon and MJ
[Michael]
Oooohh...
[Akon]
Yeeaaahh...

This life don't last forever (hold my hand)
So tell me what we're waiting for (hold my hand)
We're Better off being together (hold my hand)
Than being miserable alone (hold my hand)

[Akon]
Cause I've been there before
And you've been there before
But together we can be alright.
Cause when it gets dark and when it gets cold
We hold each other till we see the sunlight

[Michael]
(So if you just)

[Michael/Akon]
Hold my hand
Baby I promise that I'll do
All I can
Things will get better if you just hold my hand
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my, hold, hold my, hooold, hold my hand.

[Michael]
(Hold my hand)

[Akon]
The nights are getting darker (hold my hand)
And there's no peace inside (hold my hand)
So why make our lives harder (hold my hand)
By fighting love, tonight. (sooooo)

[Michael/Akon]
Cause I've been there before
And you've been there before
But together we can be alright (alright)
Cause when it gets dark and when it gets cold
We hold each other till we see the sunlight

So if you just hold my hand
Baby I promise that I'll do (If you just, If you just)
All I can
Things will get better if you just hold my hand (yeahh)
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my, hold, hold my, hooold, hold my hand.

[Michael]
Hold my hand

[Akon]
I can tell you're tired of being lonely (yeahhh)
Take my hand don't let go baby hold me (hold mee)
Come to me let me be your one and only (hold my haand)
So I can make it alright til' the morning (hold my hand)

I can tell you're tired of being lonely (hold my hand)
Take my hand don't let go baby hold me (hold mee)
Come to me let me be your one and only (one and only)
So I can make it alright til' the morning (hold my hand)

[Michael]
Hold my hand

[Michael/Akon]
Hold my hand (yeahhh)
Baby I promise (hold my hand) that I'll do
All I can (hold my hand)
Things will get better (oohhhhoooo) if you just hold my hand (ooooo)
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,

[Akon]

All I can (hold my haand)
Things will get better if you just (oohhoo) hold my hand
Nothing can come between us if you just hold,
hold my, hold, hold my, hooold, hold my hand.

[Akon]
