Your home remedies for a cold.

I live in New Mexico and the universally accepted remedy for a cold here is a big bowl of green chile. Sure, the spiciness clears your sinuses almost immediately, but green chiles also have a ton of capsaicin and more vitamin C than oranges. (Then again, we will find almost any reason to put green chile on anything and everything.)

Staying in bed, pouting, drinking tea, and getting all caught up with the Kardashians. What? It totally worked for me this week! I barely notice the drop in IQ.

Lots of rest, green tea, and meds.

If you have a stuffy nose, eat something spicy (pepperjack cheese, taco bell hot sauce, etc...) and viola. No congestion for a little while.

Chicken soup has been clinically slowness to reduce cold symptoms. Colds are caused by viruses that are heat sensitive. Any warm beverage, soup helps.

Recently read about this: elderberry extract. It's got antiviral qualities that have been proven to fight 10 strains of the flu. I don't get colds very often, but I'm going to look for this just in case.

I also found a recipe for a cough syrup made from honey and citrus fruit--supposed to work really well. I just need to find buckwheat honey.

SunnyD and vodka. But I actually use that to prevent a cold I figure with that much vitamin C and alcohol running thru my veins it kills just about everything. I haven't been sick in years. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Echinea, zinc vitamin c. As soon as symptoms start. Too late and it's useless. I'm aware of studies that show this to be ineffective but it works for me and my (adult) kids. Placebo effect, anyone?

Lots of zinc (I like the zinc lozenges, dual purpose), and wear socks and a scarf to bed.

Zinc makes me sick to my stomach. I drink water until I sprout gills. And then I drink hot water with lemon and a touch of honey.

Did I mention the water?

Chamomile and ginger tea with "hot" honey. This stuff (hot honey) is made by a local farmer. Its raw unfiltered honey blended with some chile oil. The honey soothes my throat, ginger settles my tummy, and the heat helps clear my head! And of course chicken soup is always a staple in cold season.
