What is up with grownups who post on FB stuff like: "Soo excited, five more days till my birthday!" ???

What are you, like, seven?

Ego kibbles for everybody!

I posted on fb a couple of weeks ago that I was already looking for what kind of birthday cake I wanted, and my birthday isn't until the end of March. Okay, so I was laughing at myself with my fb post, but really, I am excited about my birthday this year. It's not only a milestone birthday, but it'll also be 5 years since I started thinking about my 5 year plan, and I've accomplished most everything on the plan. Including a couple of things that until recently I didn't think were going to happen. So yeah, I'm kind of excited and really plan to celebrate my birthday this year. And I don't care who knows it.

My 40th is really soon and I feel like I am making all kinds of plans so other people won't feel bad. They want to do stuff for my birthday, and it's very nice of them, but it makes me squirmy and I just want it to go away. I'm not that upset about it or melancholy or anything. I just want it to go away.

LOL, yeah, that's why I blocked my birthday on facebook. I felt weird with people I hadn't seen in a while (cousins, old math teachers, etc...) wishing me a happy birthday.

And way to go Inconnu for achieving your 5 year goals! I'm impressed!

Thanks! Although, I'm not too sure how impressed you should be. Most of them didn't happen the way I had actually planned, yet somehow I managed to check off most of them as done.

Anyway, it's a good year, I'm happy to be alive and have a good life, and I'm in the mood to celebrate.

I do not have not problem with people announcing their birthday is coming. My sister is doing a count down of the days since she will be 50 on her next b-day (in November). More power to her.

I don't announce that mine is coming but I guess I have always kind of liked that sometimes you can get a little attention for not doing anything but existing, and having a birthday, one day per year. When I worked in the school system and other places, I was a little jealous when announcements were publically made about so-and-so's birthday. Mine would come and go, unnoticed, and other than dropping hints to people in advance (which I have never done) I never knew how to get that same attention for myself on that "special day."

I guess that might explain why I broke down in tears on my own 50th bday when my H surprised me with a big party. I had never had a birthday party as a child, or ever in my life until that day. It was wonderful thing that my H did for me. So I wish all my FB friends a happy birthday and I enjoy it when they wish me one as well, even though I realize if not for FB, I would not know when their birthdays are, and they would not know mine either.

Oh, and I have to add this little story. I once taught gifted education. It just happened that I was being observed by the principal on my birthday. I created a Jumble Puzzle for my students as one of their activities. The answer to the puzzle was "Today is Mrs. _________'s birthday."

Well, the principal tried to do the puzzle along with the elementary students. Some of them easily got the answer but he had to have quite a bit of help. And when he was finally "told" the answer, he went and told another person at the school with the same last name, "Happy Birthday" totally oblivious to what the answer to the puzzle meant. I have often felt a little "invisible" in life, but most of the time I can laugh about it!

how wonderful!! We did the same thing for my mom on a 'milestone' birthday. I did not know at the time, but she had never had a birthday party, either! I am SO glad that we did that for her.

Hell, LIFE hasn't turned out the way I planned! I'm still impressed

And to FaithFool--- UGH, YES, Facebook is a lot of 'ego kibbles' I often wonder how it is changing people's perceptions of life & what it should be...

I love my birthday. Have not announced it on FB, but would consider those that do, to be joyful and not necessarily narcissistic.

GabyBaby posted 1/27/2014 17:38 PM

Like a previous poster, if it werent for Facebook, I wouldn't know when most of my friends' birthdays occur, beyond the month in which they were born. Hell, I have 7 siblings and I can only reasonably pin down 2 birthdays of those 7.

For me, it was just another box I filled in when dressing up my profile a bit.
I leave off the year (ahem ), but the month and date are there along with the city in which I live, etc.
My profile is locked down though, so only friends and family see my info anyway.

ETA: I wanted to add that I have groups of friend within the friends that are restricted from viewing some portions of my profile. Old school chums are fun to catch up with, but they don't necessarily need to see info on my kids, etc.

Guilty and proud LOL. I do it so people will remember to buy me gifts.

^^^

I just think back to the days before social media and think "would people take out an ad in the classifieds to announce it in advance?" type deal.

I'm just old.
