I was so sad to read about his death. The article I read said that he had been sober for 23 years and then fell off the wagon. He died of an apparent heroin overdose.

It's sad to know that he will no longer be making great films but even sadder that he left behind three kids. My heart breaks for them.

RIP, PSH.

He was one of my favorites.

If you've never seen Love Liza, I highly recommend it. He was so believable as a grieving widow that turns to sniffing gasoline to cope. Really, really powerful movie.

RIP Phillip...you will be missed

Oddly, one of my favorite movies he was in is Patch Adams. It was the first time I was really blown away by his acting.

He was such a talented guy. I enjoyed his work.

I'd just read about his drug abuse problems a little while ago and thought -- no, not him. A terrible shame. RIP.

I loved him in Boogie Nights. So incredibly sad. May he rest in peace.

I was shocked!! What a loss, I had just visited Capote about a month back. He was so amazing.

I also saw Loving Liza, it was such an odd movie, but he was wonderful in it. What a loss.

So terribly sad. He was a really fabulous actor(!!!) who brought a lot of depth to roles. He wasn't a pretty boy, he was someone who could act and make you feel like you already knew him or someone very much like him.

Heroin has become mainstream ~ WTF? As if that isn't bad enough, recent reports are that it is tainted with fentynal and many are OD'ing from it.

ITA. That's a big reason why I loved his work. He was almost the antithesis of Hollywood.

Apparently, he was also pretty great in real life-- very down to earth. He came up to where I live to shoot a movie a few years ago, and everything I read about his visit said that he was a great guy.

Holy cow-- Love Liza. I think that was the first independent film I'd seen him in, and his acting blew me away.

The first movie I saw him in was Twister. Also loved him in Cold Mountain. Such an incredible talent and such a waste.

It is a quite sad thing that such a talented man was overcome by addiction, and made such horrible choices.

I just wish the media would quit making these famous people who OD out to be victims. Addiction is an ugly nasty horrible thing, but these stars who have every resource at their fingertips, and yet don't overcome it.
This should be a wake up call to our nation, and our kids. Not making it out like the heroin walked in to his apartment, and shot him in the arm on its own. Heroin is a dangerous thing, and is taking more and more young lives.

It is a sad sad thing, and I hope his kids have lots of love and support to get through this sad time.

What I dislike about the media coverage is not that they make them out to be victims, but they make them out to have more human value than the 99%. Heroin is mainstream and people are dying from it everyday. It knows no social or economic boundaries. Suddenly one of the 1% dies from it and they need to know who sold it to him and round them up. For the rest of John Q. Public, not so much. Every human in this world is someone's daughter/son/sister/brother/spouse, etc.

. . . but these stars who have every resource at their fingertips, and yet don't overcome it.

Exactly. But that doesn't speak to the users, it speaks to what a nasty and evil drug heroin is. Many say if you try it once, you are an addict for life. You may have bouts of freedom from it but it always rears its ugly head.
