I am getting overwhelmed and I can't decide on a lawyer. How did you decide on yours? Thanks.

Mine works in the same building as me and I had heard good things about him. I recommend asking people you trust - the best recommendations will come from people who've used a lawyer before.

Mine came through a recommendation from a friend that had used her and had an ugly divorce. She said the attorney was great and she came out ahead. Also, the first time I met my attorney, I liked her. She put me at ease and was clear and confident in the info she have me. The first attorney I saw was a very different experience, seemed unsure about some if the laws, etc.

So get personal referrals from your divorced friends and go with the one you feel best about.

Asked around and got names.. Called 4 then had consults with 2. I knew which one of the two I met with was for me. I got names from others who had D'd and from a friend who is an IC and even my IC gave me a name.

The yellow pages. I called multiple attorneys- and spoke to numerous arrogant male attorneys and others who wanted hundreds of dollars just for a consult!!

On about the tenth attorney that I called- I spoke to his para-legal. She told me his credentials. He's been in practice for over 20 years- he sits on the bench part-time in family court- he's a family man with grandkids and is a deacon at his church!! And the topper- my case (long-term marriage and wh's multiple infidelities/sahm etc.) is the cases which he strives for!!

His para-legal also said that a 30 min consultation is no charge. So- I made an appt with him. During my consultation- after 30 min I told him that I was over my time limit. He smiled and said "Don't worry about that just keep talking!" So- we talked for over an hour free of charge! I so loved this man!! Plus- compared to other attorneys' his retainer is only about a third of what some others were expecting!

So- pull out your phonebook and call around! Find an attorney who'll consult with you face to face free of charge! That way you'll know that they're not in practice just for the money alone!!!!!

I asked WH's uncle if he knew an attorney that shared our faith. He knew of one and got his name and number for me. I met with him, liked him. Done.

I looked in the mirror. Nobody has my best interests at heart but me. I did it all pro se.

At one point, i panicked and went to a lawyer for a consult. She said that it was the best work by an amateur that she had ever seen.

I had already been to 3 consults. Finally a guy I work with mentioned that he had dated a girl in high school who had gone on to become an attorney and suggested that I give her a call.

WOW! Where the others I had talked with were watching the clock, refusing to give me any guidance until they had been retained, and generally talked to me as though I am a moron, this woman actually took the time to listen to my entire story by telephone. (And it's a doozy of a story!) She then set the appointment, and gave me some general advice on how to protect myself legally until I can get in to see her. That first phone call lasted about an hour.

Two nights ago, she called again (after hours) to reschedule due to the weather and to see if there had been any new developments. She also asked about my emotional state and said that in light of my circumstances, I might want to consider some counseling. That call lasted about 30 minutes.

I have 45 minutes of her time on Monday as my free consultation. One of the other idiots charged me $100 for 15 minutes (which I did not know about until the consultation was over).

I accidently found a caring and compassionate lawyer. Who knew such a thing existed?

I don't know yet if she is the best lawyer in the world, but at this point I have every confidence that she has my best interests at heart and will do her best.
