I'm scheduled for one on Saturday. I know you're not supposed to wear powder or deodorant but I was reading the paperwork last night and it says no caffeine. What? My appt is at noon and I want my coffee in the morning.

I don't remember ever being told not to have caffeine before a mammogram. Is this something new?

Hi there,

I have a mammogram every year and have done so for years (in the UK). I've NEVER been told not to wear powder or deodorant or not to drink coffee! What a lot of nonsense.

If you haven't had one before, it's like having your boob squished between two pieces of plastic. Not very comfortable but doesn't last long.

Don't worry! Hope this helps.

SHI

WS had two LTAs of 10 years and 12 years; further 8/9 affairs; EAs, 2 OC. Looks horrific but he is fully immersed in trying to find the 'broken.' It's on-going and painful. If there's a blue sky and sunshine, then it's a good day.

This recommendation has been around and it has to do with discomfort during the mammo. Caffeine can cause increased discomfort.

I always have my mammo later in the afternoon and am full of caffeine. I never had an issue.

It does not affect the quality of the scan at all.

Have your coffee - it will be fine.

Love always hopes.

Thank you! I've had several and I've always had my coffee in the morning. I do have to call my doctor tomorrow for results of some bloodwork so I thought I'd ask him, but I figured I'd run it past the SI experts first .

I don't really get nervous for these. I know it can be unpleasant but I figure it's worth a little discomfort to potentially avoid breast cancer. My SIL is battling it at the moment and I am seeing it firsthand, unfortunately.

Thank you for the encouragement!

No powder or deoderant here as well, but I've always been able to have caffeine. At least I don't remember punching anyone in the face and being arrested for assault, so I am pretty sure I was allowed caffeine.

The caffeine is due to discomfort, if you have never stopped before, and you didn't die you won't this time either.

It is also my understanding that they have gotten away from no deodorant, or powder thing. I asked about it at my one last summer because it was 100 degree day, and I was having it in the middle of the day, I certainly was NOT going to go without.

They said it doesn't matter anymore.

I would ask the breast center you are having it done at what the deal is so you know for next time. I suspect they just have not updated their forms.....

I could be way off though too.

Last year the form said no deodorant no powder, but it definitely didn't say no caffeine. I'm okay with the no deodorant. It's been so cold here, I haven't sweated since October .

Another change of protocol apparently (not with the mammo but at the gyn) is they don't give pap tests every year? He said the new recommendation is that if you've had it done the past 3 years (which I have), then I didn't need it done this time.

I switched places for my mammos 2 years ago. If the place uses digital tech, then the deodorant/powder thing isn't a issue. That's what the tech told me anyways.

You would have to avoid caffeine for more than one day for it to improve any potential discomfort.

The ban on deodorant and powder is due to the potential for aluminum in those products that could show up on the films. I do get digital mammograms, they are still telling me no products. Better safe than sorry.

But you can always just wipe off at the facility.

There is no scientific evidence for that. Drink your coffee.

Around 25 years ago i had a mammogram come back with some abnormalities. It was strongly recommended i give up caffeine for at least a week before i re-mammoed. I did and the redo came back fine.

About a year ago i had really increased my caffeine intake when i went for a mammogram. It came back abnormal and i needed another mammogram and ultrasound. It was again recommended i give up the caffeine prior to the tests. I did. They came back fine. I will always give up caffeine at least 2 weeks before any mammogram from now on. For me it seems to make a difference.

My instructions are for 'on this date', so my no caffeine instruction doesn't even make sense according to what you said, gettherefromhere.

I'm going to mention it to the doctor today when I call him for bloodwork results and see what he says.

ETA And we're only talking about one cup of coffee in the morning. I'm not a big coffee drinker, I just like my one cup first thing.

There are some studies out there that show consistent use of caffeine can cause fibrocystic changes in the breasts - I have read sort of water filled lumps that show up on mammograms as changes in the breast and need to be further studied to confirm they are not cancer. These are not at all linked to cancer but simply show up as abnormal areas on the mammogram and need to be confirmed as non-cancerous lumps. If I cut the caffeine I do not have these.

There are other studies that show cutting caffeine the day of the mammo helps to cut the sensitivity and discomfort of the mammo.

Of course there are studies that say neither of these are true and it may be coincidence that I had a correlation between caffeine and my abnormal mammos.

For me, if the caffeine makes a difference - if nothing else it saves me the money, the stress, and the discomfort of having a mammogram come back abnormal and having to repeat the process (plus a possible ultrasound). I would guess for others the caffeine intake really doesn't matter. I am in the group of do what works for you!

Thanks again for all the feedback. SI is such a good source of collective wisdom and experience.

Anyway, the doc said to drink my coffee and not worry about it, that it can be an issue for women with fibroids (and some other stuff but after he said I can have my coffee I stopped listening). And he said to blame him if they say anything .

I've had several cysts now drained from my breast, and the parting words from the doc are always, "Drink less caffeine!!"

And I only have one cup a day!

Also, generally there are wipes there for your underarms, so I wear my deodorant and wipe it off, then put on more when I'm all finished!

The recommendation is still no powders or deodorants, they can leave a false image. I don't think it's a big deal though, if you forget, you just wipe it off when you're there.

This is the same thing my doctor told me. After having yearly pap tests since the age of 16, it's a bonus to get a year off!

I have heard of no powder or deodorant, no long jewelry ,either, but caffeine????? That's a first. I do drink my coffee , then go for the mammogram which I, too, schedule in the afternoon.
