Is "70's hair" a compliment or a slam?

I got my hair colored, cut, and styled today at my she-she salon that I love. I was feeling pretty good about it. Then we came home and my MIL was kindly helping DS10 with his homework. We talked for a minute and then she said, "Oh! You got you hair done! Is that style from the 70's? *picks up a long strand of hair* It looks nice."

Is that good or bad? I'm confused.

I think that it all depends on the person who made the statement. Haven't we had a convo about your IL's? I'm thinking that MIL is the one who is compelled to take you down a peg with every statement?

It could be taken either way. I'd choose to pretend that she meant it as a faaaaaaaabulous compliment and say, "Thanks! I'm feeling very Farrah today!"

Farrah Fawcett hair good.
Bradley Cooper in American Hustler hair bad.

Where I'm from the derisive comments are about "80s" hair. Big old bouffant like hair dos with a pound of hair spray. I calculated this week I'd spent 30 minutes a day for 20 years on my own 80s hair. That's literally four months worth of time. Blech!!!

That's my mom I think, but only when she gets in one of those moods where she feels the overwhelming urge to "fix" me.

MIL is usually more sneaky when she's setting me down. She is also very NOT style or fashion conscious.

Oh well. Maybe I will update my doo some day.

I feel compelled to reply because I think 79 was the last year I had a full head of hair .

Crap! I'm old!

When you put it that way 5, 70's hair sounds real good.

When I think of 70's hair I think of thick, long, healthy hair parted in the middle. Or the Dorothy Hamill cut that all my friends had in grade school!

I'm not sure if it's a compliment or an insult, but if you like it who cares. Take is as a compliment, and be happy you got a pretty do.

It could be like me, who did a home box job, highlight over the weekend, and it is obviously noticble, and a little too blond for me, and NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE other than my H and kids have said a word. LOL It must look worse than I thought. Like Grandma always said if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.....

LOL. When I'm not sure a statement is a compliment or an insult, I just go with compliment, and respond super enthusiastically -- "thank you! I love it too! didn't my hairdresser do a GREAT job!" Then toss your hair about with a big grin.

This actually works even when you know it's an insult.

knightsbff posted 3/14/2014 09:46 AM

I smiled and said, "Thanks. I love it."

Then my brain kicked in and I thought.....hmmmm.......???

Tushnurse, I just found a site where you can get salon color mixed for you buy professional stylists with detailed instructions and support for doing it at home. I ordered my color for next time. I researched it and reviews were very good. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the site so I will PM it to you if you want.

I think "70s hair" is a compliment because Farah Fawcett is generally considered the standard. When I think of 70's hair, I think of Charlie's Angels, long layers hair worn feathered.

Someone made the same comment about my recent cut and meant it as a compliment. My layers fell feathered on one side so I just brushed them out.

I also come from a place where being told you have 80's hair is a dig. Aqua net + teasing = Cheesy hair band

Gottagetthrough posted 3/14/2014 13:04 PM

I would say good! even if she meant it as a dig, take it as a compliment! If she's that kinda woman, she would only pick on your hair if it looked good!

And Farrah Hair is very pretty!

An aside-- My family comes from a town famous for chocolate. Every year, we would get the inlaws some of the yummy hometown chocolate. Once when MIL and I were alone, she said, "Oh, I don't really like that hometown chocolate" I was crushed! I'd given that to the in laws for years! Then I said, "Oh, ok, I wont buy it next year. Thanks for the tip"

She got flustered and said, "Oh, its just me, everyone else loves it. Please still buy it." Guess she didn't think her put down through! When she saw I would not get her any more chocolate, she back tracked!!! (And for the record, she scarfs the whole dang box down!!!")

Sorry, I vote that it was a slam. Sounds like a slam. Doesn't mean she's right, WTF does she know anyway?

traicionada posted 3/16/2014 07:12 AM

Nah! And since I totally have huge 80's hair we should find someone with 90's hair & get our picture taken

karmahappens posted 3/16/2014 10:57 AM
