With regard to exercise:
Strength training (heavy lifting)

Unless you have a compelling problem, like food allergies or sensitivities, don't cut food groups out of your diet. Learn to eat in a healthy manner--good habits are as hard to break as bad ones.
Exercise is very important. Find something you like, then mix it up with other forms of exercise. Variety is good for your body. Generally, a mix of cardio, weight training and stretching is good, but you will find what works for you. I spin, weight train and do yoga two times a week each.
First, change what you eat. Sugar is enemy #1. And it's in everything! Lots of vegetables, brown rice or quinoa instead of sugary starchy carbs, and protein. I eat protein at every meal. 1 whole egg + egg whites for breakfast, chicken and vegetables for lunch, chicken, vegetables and brown rice for dinner...I may turn into a chicken someday but damn it, it's working. Don't drink your calories. We often don't think of how many calories we consume as a beverage: coffee loaded with cream & sugar, sodas, juices/smoothies, etc. Drink water, and if you want flavor and like tea, I drink iced tea sweetened with stevia extract rather than sugar. Have a cheat meal every week where you eat what you want, so you don't feel deprived.
Next is workouts. Strength training is vital to maintain muscle and get your metabolism up. Yes, cardio burns fat but it also eats up muscle. I do a mix of the two; strength training 2x per week and cardio 2x per week.
Remember that you can't out-exercise a bad diet. This is how I screwed myself before...I used to go to the gym 4-5 days per week and I was building muscle like crazy, but I was getting bigger! because all the muscle was blanketed under a layer of fat---I just ate MORE because I figured I was working out, so I deserved it. No more. I focus on eating right as #1.

I make my own bread using nut/seed flour and use zucchini and daikon as noodle alternatives.
Yes, I was thinkin of going the no pasta and bread approach and see if that makes a difference.
I also stopped drinking alcohol entirely.

It works. It's boring but it's only 3 days.
