So, a dear friend from here had a huge, beautiful Peach tree delivered to us as a gift, it's gorgeous and healthy and happily planted along with our other Peach tree (same species) and then at my 50th birthday party, one of our oldest friends gave me a lime tree. That is happily planted (thank you landscapers!) along side our Myer Lemon and Persian Lime tree.

All the tree's have been living together now for close to a month but today MH discovered about 30 of these little metallic flies on one of the peach tree's and on the Myer lemon tree. What are they?? Should I spray?

Last year we got delicious lemons off our tree and all the tree's now have buds and are setting with fruit. I don't want to lose anything.

Any help from master gardeners would be much appreciated!!

DS,

Are they green bottle flys? They usually are attracted to feces and dead animals. Are the dogs pooing near the trees?

The dogs poop every where...LOL!! But I do Poop Patrol every night, I never leave their waste behind, the yard is very clean.

Do you think the flies are harmless to the fruit? Because if so, you're getting a jar of homemade peach jam

In general, bottle flys eat trash, not healthy fruit. But, because of their nature, it's not good to have them on the trees because they can carry unsavory substances to the fruit from where they've been dining. They don't lay eggs in fresh fruit, usually in decaying animals. The maggots only eat dead flesh. Google bottle flys and see if it matches what is on your tree.

Look up your local Cooperative Extension office (often affiliated with your local agriculture college). If you can 'catch' (swat) one or several flies, you can bring them in a bottle or baggie for ID and information of getting rid of them if necessary.

I didn't see them...but I'll show MH the picture to see if it matches up with what he saw on them.

Thanks!

I think that as long as they don't look like the ones below, you're fine.

Also keep in mind some species of bees look more like flies to "blend" in, if they are the flowers they may be pollinators. Sweat bees are often shiny and metallic looking, but they eat the flower nectar, and pollinate too. So they are good guys.
