20 miles from home, at Harbor Freight.
He didn't see me at first. I said "Hi, <same first name as me>"
We chatted a minute or two. He asked how I was, I said that I was having some bad times, he thought it was about his sister... But it wasn't. It was about a couple of bad things that have happened to me, involving unemployment, water damage to my house, and a problem with my road/dam/driveway.
He told me he still sticks up for me with family, which I suppose is nice. Not that it matters; they're her family, not mine.
I just laughed and walked away after a bit.
Take care of yourself. There's a great future out there. It won't come to you; you have to go to it.

What a relief that you can laugh instead of shudder after an encounter with an ex-IL.
I hope your bad times level out, and your good times ramp up.

Congratulations!!!!
Did you feel as calm as you sound in your post

better to leave them broken than to hurt
yourself putting it back together.

Ex-IL have been away all winter and get back this weekend. We live on the same street. Small place.
Dreaddddddinggggg.
MIL will give me this pathetic shoulder squeeze of supposed empathy but will completely blameshift saying we had a volatile marriage a "must do what is best for the boys..."

I'm friendly with a few of my XIL'S. Just yesterday while picking up my son for Easter vacation I chatted a bit with my XBIL. He have no problems between us and he actually said to me once that I should D my XWW because she does not appreciate the man I am. I laughed it off at the time, but the dude was right. I'm not friends with my XIL'S, but I can have friendly conversations with some of them.
