Misophonia, literally "hatred of sound", is a neurological disorder in which negative experiences (anger, flight, hatred, disgust) are triggered by specific sounds.[1] The sounds can be loud or soft.[2]
People who have misophonia are most commonly angered, and even enraged, by common ambient sounds, such as other people clipping their nails, brushing teeth, chewing crushed ice, eating, slurping, drinking, breathing, sniffing, talking, sneezing, yawning, walking, chewing gum, laughing, snoring, typing on a keyboard, whistling or coughing; saying certain consonants; or repetitive sounds.

I have just learned of this condition. I am sure I have shared here at SI how I can not bear to listen to the hunting programs that my dear husband loves to watch only because I can't stand to hear the hunters whispering. The same with golf on TV, can't bear the commentater's.

Other noises that can cause me to get upset are: gum snapping, shuffling feet, chewing with mouth open, whistling. I am sure there is more.

How about you all? Do you think you may have this? Here is the link if you want to read more: chttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia

I want to literally murder my coworker when he clips his nails at his desk. Clip, clip, clip. That noise makes me stabby.

tushnurse posted 5/16/2014 13:05 PM

Uh Yah - I have it. Lets see things that make me crazy to the point I can't think.....The kids in the office next to mine banging the wooden blocks incessantly. Two or more TV's/radio/going at once. Loud breathers.

I'm sure this puts me on some sort of special weirdo, list but I don't care.

On the other hand there are other noises that I find very calming, a gentle rain, a box fan, an attic fan, water rippling in a river, or gently hitting against the side of a boat or dock. Those things calm me immediately.

Surprisingly, that isn't a noise that makes me stabby, but from what I have been reading about the subject, the nail clipping thing is a biggie for many who have misophonia.

Chewing. Oh...oh goodness....I hate to hear anyone chew. The sound of the jaw and the squishy sound...UGH!

No, it means you have misophonia. We. Are. Not. Weirdos.

I just always thought I had some very deep seated anger issues that gum snapping brought to the surface.

SisterMilkshake posted 5/16/2014 13:20 PM

Yep, Junebug, I bet that is the number 1 on the list for most of us with misophonia.

There are many for me. I'm very 'pitch' sensitive. Certain video games in particular.

I also hate hate hate shuffling feet. Definitely makes me stabby!

If my "death glare" actually could kill people, there would be countless shufflers dead in my wake!

Xpos hated lots of noises like typing on a computer keyboard, chewing gum, nail clipping, almost *any* noise that I made! Didn't mind them when others made them, tho. I attributed it more to ass-ophobia!

Do you hear high-pitched electronic whining sounds that others don't????

That might actually be tinnitus. I think I read that tinnitus sufferers also tend to have misophonia.

See, thats what I thought I had. No, it isn't just "one" person for me, thebighurt, it is anyone who made any of those, for me, "forbidden" noises.

Oh, just thought of another one. My DS18 cracks his knuckles! Constantly! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I got a meth-head who comes in my store who grinds his teeth so loudly it is friggin unreal-I want to climb the walls when he is doing it.

My people!

So many of these hit my buttons - chewing, nail clipping, clicking a pen over and over...

Sniffling and slurping hot beverages are the two biggest ones for me, though. I go directly into "cut a bitch" mode when I hear these.

SisterMilkshake posted 5/16/2014 14:19 PM

64, I wanted to climb the wall just hearing you describe that sound! You've got my sympathy, dude!

My people!
nik, did you know this was a real thing? I didn't.

Yes!

jrc1963 posted 5/16/2014 14:40 PM

Loud chewing!

I think that's about it.

I have tinnitus too.... I hate that.

Oh, jrc1963, I am so sorry. That has got to be awful. I know it can be debilitating for some people.

Yes. Living in an apartment is impossible for me.
I live in a suburb, and have a Marpac noise maker in the room with me at all times (it makes sounds like a box fan to muffle things like lawn mowers, the 15,000 yappy dogs in this neighborhood, etc.)

At school I take tests with earplugs in.

These sounds don't bother me, they actually enrage me. My blood boils. It's really a terrible affliction and difficult to live with.

Is there any kind of therapy for this?
